    Egg bound hen?

I tried and I can’t feel anything egg like. It just feels mushy.

    Egg bound hen?

I think my hen is egg bound. I noticed this after she was penguin walking and her vent is leaking water poop. She is willing to eat but it feels like her abdomen is bloated with fluid. Is that typical when egg bound? I can’t feel an egg at all. Earlier this week she started sleeping in a...

    missing feathers

The feather lose really isn't around their vents at all. Its all backs, wings and around their heads. They all have bright red combs and are eating, drinking, laying normally. I have a broody in our hospital cage but once she's done I think I'll try separating the one from that group with no...

    missing feathers

I have some hens that are missing feathers. It is not a rooster issue. It started with one hen missing some on her back when we had a rooster. I put an apron on her and then we ended up getting rid of the rooster and the feather loss continued to get worse. I can't see any parasites on her...

I also agree on high living standards for animals. I'm just thinking providing a litter box might be a reason not to get a barn cat at all for me. I would never get an animal and not provide what they needed. Just asking questions so I know what I'm in for. I see a lot of barn cats in large...

Totally understand good animal husbandry but after having 4 indoor cats for 14 years I'm totally over cat litter boxes. Maybe I wouldn't mind so much if it's outside. We'll see.

I assume you have to have a litter box in their dog kennel but once they are set free is the expectation that you will still have to provide a litter box? I want to get some as well but I don't want to clean more litter boxes (we already an inside cat).

I get mine at the Dexter Mill. I buy non GMO feed for $18 a pound for 50 lbs. actually it might be 18.99 a pound I can't remember. I know I could get feed cheaper at TSC but this is fresher, non GMO and I like to support the local mill.

Just trying to stay a step ahead of the girls and get an idea of my options! In the past I've either used my own eggs or I've gotten fertile eggs from a neighbor but she's roosterless at the moment and we are soon to be too.

Does anyone in the Dexter / Chelsea / Ann Arbor area have fertile hatching eggs? Just planning ahead for my next broody hen. I don't need them now just trying to get an idea what might be available this spring or summer.

    Rough rooster

I've come full circle on my thoughts about my rooster. He's been in a 4 ft dog kennel for 2 days now and he's extremely unhappy and stressed. I decided not to attempt to pluck my hens broken feathers. I don't want to cause her more pain. She just finished a molt so it will be a long time...

    Rough rooster

Thanks so much! I have a good feeling about this guy. I'm hoping the quick spring warm up we had got to him and he'll settle down.

    Rough rooster

I think one might be worth trying a bit longer. He's really the best we've had yet in terms of behavior to the hens and us. He doesn't seem that agrresive when he mates and it's entirely possible another hen caused the comb damage. Or maybe I'm just hoping he's not that bad, lol. Just so I...

    Rough rooster

Thanks again for your advice! He is our 4th attempt at a nice rooster. I actually thought he was doing really well until last week. I'll give him one more chance after this injury and if he's still an issue he'll be dinner.
