My girls are cracking me up! They don't mind the cold at all! I'm still letting them roam during the day, and I went to close up the coop last night, I was following their little tracks in, love them!

Mine have slowed down their laying with the colder weather and shorter days... maybe that's it? I have 5 laying hens and get 1-4 eggs/day.

Thanks all! I've also added 3 more ladies to the group (total of 8 now), so hopefully that will help warm things up :)

That's exactly what I was thinking of doing... here's to hoping we have another mild winter! (like last year)

Heated or no? I don't have electricity in my coop right now - how do you all get through the winter?

Anyone interested in a 5 month old Golden Sebright Rooster? He's hit his teenage years, and he doesn't bother me at all, but he's started going after my toddler, which is not okay... I'd hate to put him down, but he can't stay here.

I'm in Middlebury, but it's my first winter with chickens too. From all that I hear, they will be fine, I'm just going to get a heatlamp for the water (so it doesn't freeze)

My chicken is roosting in a tree not the coop...Help!

I did the 3-day lock down with mine, and it helped them like the coop/run again, but I still need to bribe them into the coop at night... I only feed them in the morning and at night, so I know that they will come a-running when they see me. We also cut down the brush and tree they were...

My chicken is roosting in a tree not the coop...Help!

Julie, How's it going with yours? After a 3-day lockdown, I let them out - they tried to roost back up in the tree in the afternoon, but I scooped up my BRs, put them in the coop, the rooster followed to check on them, and then 2 more ladies came closely after :) My leghorn REFUSED to come in...

My chicken is roosting in a tree not the coop...Help!

I was able to lock all mine in at dinner last night, but boy-oh-boy did they want out this morning! Today will be easier because because I won't be home by sunset to lock them in anyway, but it's hard knowing they are unhappy :(

I've never heard of dusting before! Thanks for the heads up! This is my first year too - our coop is a fortress, but my chickens are free-ranging, so I've lost 2 over the course of the summer while I was at work. And now they've started roosting in trees and I lost 2 last nigh :( They are...

My chicken is roosting in a tree not the coop...Help!

I was throwing food at them last night and it didn't work... I like the water balloon idea too - I might even just squirt them with a gun...

My chicken is roosting in a tree not the coop...Help!

They are going to be so sad if I lock them up... They were stir crazy after a long weekend we went away and they stayed in the coop/run. But, I can't risk it, 3 days will be up before the weekend, and then I can work on the 'scare' factor in certain areas too. Thanks!

My chicken is roosting in a tree not the coop...Help!

This is moving up on my urgent scale - I have two missing this morning :( My leghorn roo and my favorite BR). The bribing them in at dinner time worked for 2 days, but last night I didn't get home until 45m before sunset and they were already up in the trees. Stupid chickens :(

My chicken is roosting in a tree not the coop...Help!

Bump! I'm having the same problem! It started with my leghorn Roo and and lady friend, but last night it was all 8 of them! (I also have a sebright roo). What should I do? They are completely free ranging... Would removing the Roos from the pack make a difference? (I'm extra motivated to...
