Neck injury healed but still no feathers

That’s a good idea - or maybe a child sized sock 🤷‍♀️ Whatever you use, I suggest getting something close to the color of the feathers so the other chickens don’t peck at it

Neck injury healed but still no feathers

I had a chicken that had her entire back scalped by a dog - from the base of her neck all the way down to her tail feathers. Completely skinned with muscle showing. I didn’t think she would make it. I kept it sprayed with blukote for a month and kept a hen apron on her. She never did grow back...

Hens in nesting box with broody hen

I just had the same issue, except in my case, they were chasing her out of her nest so she was trying to sit on a new set of eggs every night. I ended up moving her to a dedicated area so she wouldn’t be bothered and she hatched out 2 on Tuesday

    First time broody hatch

Thank you! Mom has them out and about today. She has them out of the coop and into the small run now, showing them how to peck at bugs. I put some of their starter feed and water out there too. I am wondering how she is going to get them up the ramp and back into the coop tonight. Should I...

    First time broody hatch

Hello, This is our first time with a broody hen (I normally incubate and raise chicks in a brooder). So, she did just ok, 2 hatched yesterday and seem ok, one pipped and never hatched and one hatched and was dead under her. I cleared out as much yucky stuff as I could without disturbing mom...

Out of town next week - outdoor brooder

Hello, I don’t post often but love the great information on this board! Hubby and I are going out of town next week for our son’s wedding and we are finishing up a big coop for our adult chickens, and repurposing our old coop for our 4 week old chicks. The old coop/now brooder is solid, not...

    Outside brooder setup... feedback?

Thanks for the feedback! That is similar to what I‘m doing, I just haven’t tried it with younger chicks.

    Outside brooder setup... feedback?

Thank you for your reply! I have done something similar in the past putting my chicks in a part of my coop - but my coop now is not very big and has so many roosts, it’s difficult to move around in there, so I decided to build a small “baby coop” that is easier to get to. The hens still see the...

    Outside brooder setup... feedback?

Hello, this is my first post, but I have read this forum often in my 15 years of raising barred rocks. I just hatched 6 chicks (with my trusty old hovabator- it is pretty beat up but always does a great job, 99-100% hatch rate- or could be I have lucked out with breeding lines, who knows)...
