Official BYC Poll: What Do You Use Your Rooster/s For?

So far my rooster is doing well. I have 1 rooster and 12 hens. That seems to be a good ratio. The best thing about him is he gets the hens to go into the coop early at night. Good fir me especially in the winter.

    Hen not leaving nest box

Yes. Look up broody behavior. Just for your info we had an egg bound hen a few years ago an got her to expell the egg by carefully injecting some water solvent jelly (ky) in her vent. Don’t break the egg. I always have the supplies on hand- jelly and a catheter tipped syringe.

    Chicken yard hawk defense

I read last week about using bailing string across my chicken yard to deter hawks. Seemed like an easy, good idea. I have my (their) coop and run attached by a passage door to a open yard surrounded by 100 ft of Electric poultry fencing. This has been in place for 3 year with no loses. I have...

    deep litter issue..possibly..

My deep layer is great. Never gets more than 4-5 inches. I clean it out spring and fall. Girls are in from sunset to dawn. Before you expand check that you have 8-10 inches of perch room each and good ventilation toward the top of the coop. Cleaning coop every few days I don’t want to go back to...

During the day their yard 30x50 is surrounded with solar generator poultry fence. I feed them a mash of rice, oatmeal, etc and pellet feed in am and a metal feeder with...

    Crumbles vs. Pellets

I'm feeding mash of brown rice, probiotics grain, oatmeal and crumble. They eat it all with little to no waste. They have grain/seed dry food available but the mash is their first choice.

Winter is Coming! Checklists, tips, advice for a newbie

:cdThis will be my 2nd winter with chickens. We're in zone 7. Last year when we'll. We use a galvanized heated waterer. No coup heat or supplemental light. They go out in their covered coup yard most days. This year we're putting up some fiberglass on the wall of their coup yard to cut back on...

what do you do with your poo?

I use the deep layer method and straw. Last fall I scooped out most of the bedding and left it covered for the winter. In the spring I incorporated it into my garden soil. I also soak some of the manure/straw in a bucket of water and make manure tea for watering plants. It's all good and not too...

    Any New Yorkers out there?

Hi, I' m off Wellwood Ave. and chicks are doing well. They are 14 weeks old so we have weeks to go before we get eggs. We've extended their outdoor space twice in the last 2 months! Jean
