As it sounds like this is your first try at hatching, regardless of which path you take, don't have high expectations. Broody hens are a great option but some hens will just stop sitting. Incubators are also a great option but require some experience to get good results. I prefer an incubator...
And it may, for 1 generation, but then that's called sex-link. Do you know if the mixed line maintains the auto-sexing with the Biel x Legbar after the first gen?
You'll likely lose the auto-sexing in the mix. Bielefelder is a carefully mixed line that took years and years to develop, any change to that mix will have unexpected outcomes.
It's the internet...take every word with a grain of salt.
That being said... I never got an egg a day on any day let alone during the winter months. But some breeds do lay better than others through the winter. I had 2 Isa Browns once that layed very well during the cold short days.
So it ended up being only 16 eggs. He had quit collecting every day because he had what he needed so he was seeing if a hen would sit on the clutch. They didn't but did manage to break alot of eggs. But still 16 eggs is good and I ain't complaining.
As far as selling them... He told me he sold 9...
Like everyone has said you haven't done anything wrong. They may not get fluffy and dry while in the bator because of the high humidity. Also, have you considered what you're gonna do if the other egg doesn't hatch? Solitary chicks don't acclimate well. I've had just one hatch before and went...
Thanks for the replies!
He's already got 2 bators full and these eggs are his excess. I was thinking it'd be a fun little project until I read up on raising them and it turned me off keeping any. I looked around and no one in my area seems to have any for sale. When do you typically see turkey...
A buddy of mine has 30+ Narragansett eggs and he has offered them to me for free just to hatch. I don't really want to raise turkeys but if I could sell the chicks and make a bit of $$ then I'd be willing.
I already have everything I need to hatch and temporarily brood the chicks and even have a...
If the roosters are completely seperated from the hens the fighting will all but stop. Bachelor pen, as suggested, is a great route, but if you free range there will still be problems. With only 2 hens though, there's no real reason, that I can see, to have so many roos. I would cull, you could...
I'm with everyone else that says poison is the way. Get a bait trap for your poison and it can be inside your coop, so long as you fix it so the trap can't be moved by your birds, and they can be. Ramix is a great poison!
I had a rat infestation a couple years ago and poison was my "last resort"...
Roosters add a certain dynamic that just isn't possible otherwise. I enjoy having a rooster, they are fun to watch. And they do put chickens in your eggs so it's easier to replenish your flock when the time is right.
Go big or go home.
Like her attitude.
Started from the bottom now she's here.
But yea I suppose any time there is a social shake up anything is possible.
