Red sumac is Staghorn Sumac, as others have mentioned. The interesting thing about Sumac is that the birds eat the berries and pretty much pass the seeds through their bodies. Is this needed scarification? Hard to tell, but I have sumac growing along my roadside that appeared only a few years...
Nope, not a new layer, and I haven't noticed this behavior previously. I'm wondering if this is the hen that has previously insisted on laying her egg on the ground outside or the floor of the hen house. Maybe she just figured out the nesting box.
I have a Brahma hen that has lately been sitting on the nest for up to 2 hours before she lays her egg. It seems a bit odd to me since I've never had a hen take that long. Yesterday she was on the nest from 2:00 to 4:00. She seems well every other way, but I'm wondering if anyone else has...

My favorite broodies (even though I have Silkies) are RIRs. Every now and then I get one that goes broody and they are the BEST mothers! They don't seem to want to abandon their chicks because they've decided to lay another clutch, the way my Silkies do. IME, Silkies have a timeline. After...
