    1st Hatch this year

Three new arrivals today....all safely in the brooder and doing well.... All these are from our own flock of Bantams, sired by Sherlock....I only pictured one of them because they are pretty much identical...each one is equally adorable One of the larger eggs we bought is showing an...

    1st Hatch this year

This batch of eggs went into lock down 2 days ago I candled them as I locked them down and out of the 16 remaining eggs I found two that had quitted somewhere during development and one that had never really started because of a detached air cell that I must have overlooked earlier. The...

    1st Hatch this year

OK. Day 1 on display. Maintaining humidity between 45 - 50%...temp at 37.5 C - I'm not going to candle again for a few days. I'm hoping that by day 6 or 7...about this time next week... I'll be able to see some signs of development as well as air cells. Here's hoping....

    1st Hatch this year

Mmmm..... Depends what you mean by 'small' - I couldn't detect any air cells at all....on any of the eggs!

    1st Hatch this year

Today I set a dozen Polish chamois bantam with frizzle gene eggs with a half dozen of our own 'home laid' bantam eggs... Before I set the eggs I candled them all. I don't normally do this...just candle them around day 10 to check development and air cells and to clear out the non-starters...

Day old chick possibly ate and drank

Just to re-enforce the replies that have already been made here.....it's no problem at all for the chicks to discover food and water within a few hours of hatching... In my experience once the buggers cotton-on there's no stopping them! and they rapidly turn into poop making machines. depending...

Turns out I love them more than I thought!

This is quite an issue! Further to my comment on P.4 of this thread....it seems to me that we create many potential problems for ourselves in our choice of dog breed and the decision to keep chickens at all if we know that our 'best friend' is never going to be a friend to our feathered...

Turns out I love them more than I thought!

Ermmm.... NHMountainMan - What's a 'raptor' ?? I know it couldn't possibly be an extinct predatory reptile from 65 million years ago so it has to be something else....I'm pretty sure we don't have them here in the UK. I'm guessing it's a nickname for something. I've heard this name mentioned...

Turns out I love them more than I thought!

Welcome Aboard! - It's great that you found us! So sorry to hear of your losses.... We introduced our three chihuahuas to our chickens while they were still chicks and living in a brooder in the kitchen. They had regular indoor interactions with them and over a period of weeks they learned...

    Easiest way to raise chicks

So many methods... Like many have said it all depends on how many chicks you're raising. I do 6 or less at a time and the first couple of weeks they spend in one of those under-bed plastic boxes that you normally use for keeping sheets or clothes in to prevent them from getting dusty. Modified...

Hey, Manhen - You really do need to specify degrees C or F... Here the default is degrees Centigrade....Just ask anyone in the UK!!
