    What breed did I get?

We got 9 chicks from freys we ordered 3 olive eggers 3 copper marans and 3 golden laced wyandottes. Two of our olive eggers are laying one of our marans are laying but I’m unsure what type of bird the three brown ones are. The chicks all got to peavy mart mixed together and the girls sorting...

Hen stomping and squatting when I approach

My chickens hate being touched when they squat and if I do they’ll do a big fluff and shake and then run away. Same reaction to being flipped on their back which they definitely don’t like either.

    definitely doesn’t mean that

Hen stomping and squatting when I approach

It’s called a submissive squat and just means they’re ready to mate. I’ve seen people say they like being pet when they do it but that’s probably my least favourite thing people say about chickens. Mine always puff up and run away if I pet them when they do it so I just leave them be.

    Matte egg?

one of our two olive eggers was pretty sleepy earlier and squatting weirdly so I checked for a prolapse and nothing was there so I left her alone. Later I went out to get the eggs and I got hers. I know it’s hers because she lays bigger eggs than her sister who started laying very recently. It’s...

Why are all my usually sweet chicks suddenly being the meanest birds I’ve ever met?

I’ll try that with the mean 3. We know two are hens for sure since they’ve laid eggs for us and we’re pretty certain the meanest is a hen she hasn’t started laying yet but her comb is very small and not bright red same with her waddles and there’s no signs of her doing this with other birds or...

Why are all my usually sweet chicks suddenly being the meanest birds I’ve ever met?

I have 9 chicks/hens (got them end of April as day olds) and 3 are laying so far 2 olive ethers and one copper maran. I also have 3 3year olds 3 4 year olds and 1 9 year old. All of my birds except for one of the 3 year olds know that my 9 year old is the boss. Although she doesn’t usually peck...

    Are thick egg yolks healthy?

My olive egger chicks just started laying one last month one this week. The eggs and especially the yolks are still tiny so I use them when lessening a portion of waffle batter and for feeding my small cat. The yolk has a hard time breaking up when trying to mix it with milk and then when I...

Hen just stays in coop advice

Could be broody but does sound like the rooster could also be an issue. When you see him mounting try to grab him and put him between your knees and push his face into the ground similar to what a top bird would do to lower ones. It will help him realize he’s not the boss. Also try carrying the...

Bloody egg three days in a row no prolapse

It ended up resolving a couple days after I posted the blood streaks getting smaller until no longer there. The hen I think laid the eggs is about 3 years old and had been through some stressful stuff for a couple weeks before it had started since we noticed she had one bubble foot and lice or...

Bloody egg three days in a row no prolapse

the egg is from one of our 3 lavender Orpingtons. Last night they all had baths since they were looking pretty gross and none had prolapses. We’ve been working on one’s feet since she has bumblefoot so the first day we thought just a bit of blood passing from stress but this is day 3 and it’s...

What is this under the wings?

I don’t like getting hands on so this is my dad looking and seeing this stuff. It looks crumbly but when he pinches it it doesn’t crumble. When my mom saw she said maybe yeast since it’s been a hot muggy summer. Does anyone recognize this? It’s only under the wings and only our middle aged...

how should i check for mites and other bugs?

tldr at end since i ramble. our hen rosemary has always been a bit scruffy but since last year has been basically bald. since she’s always been a bit strange and always seemed pretty anxious since we got her (she always had her feathers puffed up and is super protective about food and has a...

one of my chicks is super hungry and eats almost constantly

her crop has been emptying fine and about a month ago she started laying and none of the rest have so she’s just a bit ahead of them i think. she doesn’t seem abnormally bigger than her but is definitely still top of the pecking order for the chicks. thank you for the suggestion and heads up :)

some sort of spray to help prevent infection on bald spots?

i have an overpreening chicken who we can’t get to stop. at this point we’re letting her preen and just making sure to prevent injury/infection. she has a dress on so she doesn’t get sunburnt on her back but she lifts it up to preen still. my dad is worried about an infection and wants a spray...
