Please give feedback on Winter Coop Update

I think it's warm enough, but everything I've read is conflicting on adding heat. I know my husband's coworkers that have chickens in our town say they never have heated their coops. But we've had lots of frozen eggs, so we are thinking of finding a way to insulate the nesting boxes since they...

Please give feedback on Winter Coop Update

Thank you! We will have to build something similar this summer!

Please give feedback on Winter Coop Update

I just went out to check for eggs and check the water. Here is a shot of the whole set up for our 6 chickens. The whole run was covered in snow when we put up the tarp in -10 weather. It's warm today though! 26 above!

Please give feedback on Winter Coop Update

Thank you! My coop is separate from the run, although the chickens favorite place to hang out is the two foot tall space under the coop. I just took pictures of the changes, I should've done one of the whole thing! I just think it's crazy that they would rather hang out in the sand under the...

Please give feedback on Winter Coop Update

We built our first coop this summer and I wanted to make sure that it had lots of ventilation, but in the recent below 0 cold and snow, it ended up letting snow in and my run isn't covered, so my poor chickens couldn't escape the snow! These pictures are of the ways we temporarily fixed the...

    Wyoming Unite!!!!

I've been thinking about doing sprouts for my chickens in the winter, but the "growing fodder" board lists all sorts of different feed seeds to use and I'm having trouble finding them. Does anyone that gets supplies in either Buffalo or Sheridan do sprouts or fodder? Where do you get your seeds...

    Growing fodder for chickens

I can't find the seed I need to do this at my local Tractor Supply and the local co-op looks at me like I'm crazy. Can I get a simple run down so that I can articulate what I need in a way that makes sense? I know I need feed seed, but co-op said they can get me untreated winter wheat and winter...

    Wyoming Unite!!!!

I have a coop, I was just avoiding putting the feed in it. I have a small piece of plywood on top right now, but it doesn't give very much dry ground. My soon-to-be-culled roosters have been dumping the food on the ground every day, so the run is a mucky mess of wet feed. Once the 4 of the them...

    Wyoming Unite!!!!

We are getting our first major snow here in Clearmont, and I've realized our board on our run is not going to cut it in keeping an area large enough for our 6 chickens dry, let alone not have water in the food. What are some temporary measures that work for everyone else? I'm asking on here...

First time butchering: bird with possible infection

We cut that area off, so we should be ok. It would have only been there a few hours, so I don't think it had time to travel. Definitely a learning experience, butchering our first chicken.

First time butchering: bird with possible infection

I have a roo that is part of a flock of 6 red ranger roos and 6 laying hens. Everyone gained up on this roo and he is hurt pretty bad. I thought I could just heal him up to last the 4 more weeks until he is 12 weeks old, but it looks like one of the wounds (they are on the joint connecting the...

    Pecking Injuries: pictures

Ok, I figured it would take a lot of care. I'd just cull him this weekend, but a funeral is getting in the way of a grandparent sleepover and I'm not sure how we'd keep our five year olds from seeing, or being scarred.

    Pecking Injuries: pictures

I tried to mesh two flocks a couple weeks ago and my older laying hens are not taking kindly to my meat birds, which all ended up being rooster. The roosters are now 8 weeks old, so it's almost butchering time. I found one of my roosters yesterday with big blood spots at the top of the each wing...

    Butchering Age: Red Rangers
