Buff laced polish hen or rooster?

I have this 10 week old buff laced polish named Tina. Today I’ve been listening to a lot of crowing. And those wattles.... what are your thoughts? Any possibility this is still a hen? Haha.

What chores do you hate doing?

The dust while cleaning out the coop really makes a a crappy (literally) job worse.

Some chickens laying in nest box, some in just the coop?????

They just hang, I though about tie backs, but I don't think I need them. I just stapled some scrap fabric to the wood, I'm sure I'll have to replace it at some point. Maybe once a year. ..

Some chickens laying in nest box, some in just the coop?????

My chickens did this for a while, but the day that I put curtains over the nest box entrances they never did it again. Strange, but I guess it makes sense, even chickens like a little privacy. haha.

Comment by 'rubbleanddebris' in article 'Bedding Part 1: Comparing Materials'

I use sand in the coop and pine shavings in the nest boxes. Makes a quick clean up with the kitty litter scoop.

    Finally finished!! (:

When it was nicer out... they had windows open which in the city means some dim light.... but not so much with the dropping temps and closed windows... They have their spots all picked out though, they seem to have it figured out. haha. Although, I had a funny experience at about 3am when the...

    Can chickens eat coffee grounds?

I think chaff as bedding would be interesting... I personally like the sand the most. Chaff is so light, you would need a lot and I think it would be pretty messy especially in the feeders and waters. I can't imagine that it is very absorbent so you might be looking at changing often. As a long...

    Finally finished!! (:

Nice job! Looks quite cozy. Lucky hens with all that fruit around. I wish I could free range mine, but currently it's not possible. They do have a huge run though. I agree about the lamp, from what I understand (someone correct me if I am wrong)- light on your hens 24hrs can cause health...

What are favorite scraps? And what not to feed...

They love sweet corn. Whenever we grill, I grill extra for the chickens, They fly out of the coop so fast when they hear a husk of see an ear of corn that they usually end up face first into the chicken wire around the run. whole or sliced tomatoes invoke a similar reaction. They love scrambled...

    Preparing for winter

My birds got a little frostbite in the south dakota winter last year. This year I am going to keep the heated waterer outside, I think that was my moisture problem. I have foil bubble insulation in my coop for the winter. (...

    Eggs

I have eggs like the bottom two that come from either black copper marans, gold laced wyandottes, or golden cuckoo marans, but the golden cuckoo marans lay eggs like the dark one in the center of your first photo- sometimes with darker speckles. Maybe that helps? My guess for the first egg in...

    Got sand? You should!

I just switched the coop over to sand today. I'll let everyone know how it goes. The ladies seem fine with it. The coop needed a cleaning anyways.
