I had been wanting chickens for years, mostly just for eggs.
Now, I keep them for:
pest control (no spiders or grasshoppers in my yard this year!)
weed control (no dandelions, either)
compost (their poo is great and they turn the pile)
eggs (of course)
entertainment and companionship...

We have a Silver Laced Wyandotte that, a couple of weeks before she started laying, turned agressive towards me. She would run after me and peck my hands and sometimes my ankles. I made sure she knew that I was the boss by picking her up and carrying her around the yard everytime she did this...
We got our first egg on August 1st from our Silver Laced Wyandotte who was exactly 18 weeks that day. We've since received a total of nine eggs from her, one of which was a double yolker. We ate them all yesterday for breakfast!
