I used an old pond liner (the hard plastic type) and once my new coop is built, I'm going to dig a hole for it so the lip is flush with the ground and my girls won't have to jump just to take a bath.
I'm not sure if it's the cause of the limp but it may be stemming from scaly leg mites. One of my girls had/has a severe case of scaly leg mites (previous owner wasn't aware of the problem) to the point that I thought she also had bumblefoot but the swelling has gone down with just the treatment...
