you need to keep the hen and babies together. A friend in MI has biddies that hatched in January and they are in the barn and the mother hen is tending to them. The mother hen does a great job, better than we can do.
I just posted this link on my chicken blog for my local readers in case they don't already know about the swap. I will definitely be in attendance. Thanks for hosting!
:(Sorry everyone but I won't be able to make it tomorrow. Too many chicks hatching right now and dealing with this cold weather. I hope you have another in February and I'll have lots of little chickies to trade/sell.
I went and ended up buying a pair of Black Australorps. They are beautiful! They are still in the holding pen or I would post pictures (I took some but they didn't turn out good).

Being from FL we have the luxury of having sand floors and I do in all my coops. I totally agree with you. I have no smells from any coops, just my composter (yuk!).
My Wyandottes just started laying and they were 27 weeks. The main thing I noticed was their combs and waddles were bigger and darker red. I'm sure you will get eggs anytime now.
Tonight there is a small animal auction on Ramona Blvd. in Jacksonville. They have it the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month. You can buy and sell small animals and sometimes they have used supplies also. I'm going to try and go this evening.
