Adding More Chickens to Existing Flock

I have a flock of six, three Rhode Island Reds and three Buff Orpingtons. I want to add three or four more young adults this fall. How do I go about introducing the new hens? Will the new chickens eventually be accepted into my existing flock? Is there anything I should do to ensure minimal...

    Broody chickens

Happy to report by Buff Orp is no longer broody! Pulling her out of the nest repeatedly and blocking her favorite nesting box seems to have worked. I did not have to resort to the crate, but I will remember it for the next time. Thanks!!!

    Broody chickens

One of my Buff Orphingtons is now broody. She is about 14 months old. I don’t have a rooster and am not interested in hatching any babies this spring. How long will she stay broody? Is there anything I can do to speed things up?

Electric fencing, do you really need it vs non electric fencing

My experience with free range has, so far, been very positive. My chickens free range with my goats. They share a large enclosure with Premier One Solar energized Netting, but I open it so they can all move into larger pastures during the day. We have all the normal predators (except bears). I...

    Mice!

They are in the coop, but they likely came in through the run. I have deep bedding in the coop now for the winter months and I think these little pests have decided to live in it! I can remove the deep bedding and chase them out. The coop has wire mesh fabric under its floor so the only way...

    Mice!

My chickens free range, but at night they are locked in their coop. Their coop is as predictor proof as you can get but I have a significant mice problem. I am not afraid or against mice per say, but they leave their poop in my chicken’s feed and I worry about diseases from that. Should I be...

    Suspected Coccidiosis need help

Thank you so much! The speckles do not rub off easily. I had to use water, a scrub sponge, and some muscle, but everyone is active and happy. I cleaned their coop today and found only solid, healthy poop! :celebrate I will continue to monitor for behavioral changes. Thanks again!!

    Suspected Coccidiosis need help

Interesting... I feed Purina Layena Pellets, non medicated. I bought some oyster shell and mixed it in with their grit. Maybe that is the culprit? I will take it away and see if the speckles go away too. I also give them a “Scratch Feed” mix at bedtime, which they absolutely love. I toss...

    Suspected Coccidiosis need help

I am not seeing any more bloody stools around, but I am keeping my eyes open! I am, however, still getting the speckled eggs. I think they may be coming from one of my Rhode Island Reds. Attached is a picture. I know the speckles are not part of the egg shell because I can wash them off...

Thank you! I will keep them in the coop then. It is plenty big enough. During the day when they free range they go in and out of the barn where the goats stay, but I would prefer they don’t think it is their permanent home when summer roles around again. I lock them in their covered...

I have a a small chicken brooder plate that I used for my girls when they were babies. Do you think I could hang it above their roosting area?

We have water and electricity in our barn. Good to know about the down side of using heat lamps! Love the idea about putting a water bottle filled with salt water in my water buckets to help with freezing temps!!! Thanks!!!

So many nice comments, thank you! As for winter prep, I am thinking about moving them from their coop (which is good size but they only use it to roost at night) into the barn. They will have more room to move around during the day and they have the goats to help retain heat in there too. I was...
