I had to have a giggle at some of the posts brings back memories. We moved our 20 8 wk old chicks to their new house with run attached at 8 weeks old. Kept them in that area for about 1 week before I let them out to free range so they could get use to it. I had to go down each night for a week...

We have a 21 week old roo. Fathered by a RIR and mother was an Australorp. He started mounting the other hens 2 weeks ago and he shares the yard with the 4 yr old RIR. We have had no problems so far.
They are just soooo sweet.
Can you keep us posted on what they look like as they grow. We have a RIR rooster and some brown hens as well as Australorps and the chicks that have hatched look just like yours. Just wondering if the mother hen is RIR or part so the comparison would be interesting.
They are all together now and getting along great even with the age difference.
We have 46 chickens altogether. Originally were were given 21 last year in April, the roo is a RIR and the hens are Australorpes and some browns I am not sure what they are. The hens are not purebreds I don't think...
I take the babies from their mums just after they have hatched and raise them myself in a brooder box inside with lights. I clean it out just about every day only takes 5 minutes. Mothers go into a debrooder shed and are looked after very well to gain their strength back for 5 days then put back...
Heres our new babies, Black was born 26 Dec 08, then the yellow was born 1 Jan 09 then we had one hatch 7 Jan. Today we are trying to add the new baby to the other two in the big brooder.

I am in Nth East Victoria, we have some chicks that are just turned 9 weeks old. I have started putting some Grower mix in a separate feeder for them and also mixing a little into there starter crumble. The grower mix is about half the size of layer pellets and contains extra stuff to help...
