Definitely a weasel, probably an ermine. And those guys are bold. I had one approach and look at me from 2 1/2 feet away today as it was investigating the outside of my coop.
So...I decided to interfere with nature...and put a panel in front of the nest box with food and water inside...I opened up the inside to make the space larger. So this morning i hear a commotion and she knocked it down and couldn't get back in...eggs were stone cold. I took them inside and...
She is one of my newest hens...hatched in April. Very young. Hopefully very fierce but very nice to me....no growling or pecking. Hope she holds her own with the others....?
Thanks! Do you think we should remove the partition between her nest and the next one, plus close off the front of the nest from the other hens? That way I could keep some food in there for her/them. I still worry about opening the whole thing up every time to feed them...
I was away and it's a long story but...I now have a hen who has been sitting on fertile eggs for about two weeks. In the coop...and it's in the single digits temperature wise. Also the nest is cramped, in the most inaccessible place of the coop that I can only get to by raising the egg box lid...
Also a rat trap in a weasel box could work...it's a box with a hole just large enough for a weasel to get in. My trapper friend gave me one but I have not used it yet. I think the trapping season is open here...
I live in the Adirondacks in Northern NY. Hunters put carcasses --roadkill or such-- out on the ice during the winter...we can see them eat as we drive by...!
