    Size of Brooder

Hi Rose66, I started keeping chickens last year and also had a "not in the house rule." The coop wasn't quite finished when they arrived so the chicks lived in a large (2x3 ft?) cardboard box in my unheated garage for about a week while I finished things. They had a brooder lamp over half the...

    Sebright

Sal thinks she's one of the four-legeds. She begs for peanuts and will fly up to my arm on request to get them. (Her Cochin sisters are noticing and have started to let me carry them a bit too.) The other night I was working on something and shut the gate to keep my dog from fussing with the...

    Sebright

Purple would certainly describe the character of the color. Wish I could post a picture of her but I'm borrowing computer time. Husband will be relieved to hear it's the proper color! Thanks everyone!

    Sebright

Quote: I'm up to my elbows in banty cochin & dominique roosters. One is currently living in the house after bumblefoot surgery. Scares the cats half to death with his crowing! I'd sure love to replace the boys with some little hens though. On the comb color, what does "gypsy" mean? That's not...

    Sebright

I have a single gold Sebright hen, "Salvadora" that came as my "free, rare, exotic chick" from Murray McMurray. She hatched about April 26th of this year. Her comb has turned blue-black over the last month or so. I see in googling that some silver specimines have dark combs. Is this something I...

    worming food?

I hope someone responds for you but you could just call the manufacturer and ask about dosages. I've done that with questions about cat & dog medicines and had very nice service. Just Google the product or company name and see if they have a helpline number if it's not on the package. Sometimes...

How do I feed just one hen layer feed? Advice please!

So, there's really no reason to seek out "layer" feed if you've got supplemental calcium out for the hens? I spread a big bag of crushed shell on the driveway for the chickens. Gets it out and it looks tidy in the gravel. Also means I don't have to carry the bag up to the coop area!

lets see the "ugly" coops plz

I can't remember how to upload a picture to these forum things so here's a link to photos of my coop: http://strathedenfarm.blogspot.com/2010/06/its-been-long-happy-week.html The pics are at the end of the post. The coop is an enclosed lean-to that was just gathering junk. All the boards were...

    Neighbors Chickens...grrrr

Quote: I would agree but you may not be able to take them to the shelter as not all facilities take all species. If they say yes then go do it. Neighbor can pay the fine to spring them if he really wants them back. I used to work at an animal shelter that did and it was a PITB because we...

    Rooster/Hen ratio

Anyone out there have free range chickens? I have 8 roosters (5 Doms and 3 banty Cochins) to 13 hens (2 Doms, 5 Cochins, 6 bantys) on a completely free range basis. They're 6 months old and I don't see evidence of excessive mating for the most part. Am I just extra ordinarily lucky?

Big question, why did all of you new chicken owners get chickens?

Bug control! That was what pushed us over the edge. Fresh eggs we could trust and don't have to drive ten miles (and only on certain days) to get was the other reason. After about a month a total free ranging and teaching them to circle the house we noticed a major reduction of bugs. Imagine...

    Baby Chicken Mama in VA

It's only taken me 5 months to finally sign up and post to the forums even though I occasionally came searching for answers... I live in SW Virginia with 2 dogs, 10 cats, and 21 chickens (bought as chicks in April of this year) and never thought I'd enjoy the birds so much! It seems as though...
