I have had a bullying problem arise suddenly this spring. My 4 chickens (two 12 mo. and two 11 mo.) lived together just fine for 9 months after the initial integration of the two young pairs. Long story short, my younger hens (one in particular) have decided to turn on the older hen. This isn't...
Good news… Happy Feet laid an egg today!🥰
I gave her Calcium and Vitamin D as suggested for 3 days before leaving town (someone watched the chickens for us but they weren’t quite comfortable enough to do the pill).… and we also separated the flock before we left to curb bullying and give Happy...
Ok wonderful. I crushed 2 Tums up and mixed in some D3 from a gel capsule I had… hope that’s fine. I brought it out to her and encouraged her to have it, and closed the coop door so the others wouldn’t eat it. She wasn’t going for it much while I was there but I hope she will… hard to force it.
Appreciate you taking the time to read and respond!!!
Pelvic bones I’ve checked and they are about 3 fingers wide (wider than one of my other layers actually when I compared), her vent seems the right shape and does pulsate.
I suppose I could close her in the coop during the day with food...
Hi all!
Still trying to figure out what is going on in my flock, and with one hen in particular. Here is the breakdown…
I have a flock of 4 (2 hatch-mate pairs that stick together) that have been living peacefully together for almost 9 months:
11 mo. Rooster - Winnie
11 mo. Hen, non laying -...
Thank you she’s my fluffy girl. 💕
I know… it’s hard to say anymore if it’s her behaviour in checking out the nest box that caused the bullying, or bullying that caused her to hang out in there in the first place. Something shifted in the past few days and I’m worried about her health/safety...
Here are some pics of her inside with me again for a bit. Not sure if they help. Clearly her abdomen is not bulging, bald, or making her walk/stand weird. I’m still not sure if her abdomen is even bloated or not but it seems more full in my hand than her smaller sisters.
Meanwhile the two once...
Awww ☺️
Yeah I’m still not sure she has. She was still in coop when I got home. How long (days?) might a chicken normally try out nesting boxes before actually laying, if you know?
So cute!! A first egg?
There was a lot of clucking early in the coop this morning which isn’t the norm (like the egg song they sometimes do just usually not that time of morning)… I didn’t find out which hen it was. When I went out my girl was in the nesting box… we found an egg an hour later...
Good to know! ☺️ My other two lay a light tan and a brown… I can easily tell apart. I’m hoping Brahma will lay a distinctive shade so I’ll know it’s hers.
I had her inside earlier for an hour and monitored her droppings which were typical sizes and with normal amounts of white urates.
Usually they get oyster shells, it was empty, so I topped it up today! Grower feed is what I feed everyone since I have a Roo and everyone wasn’t laying - I’d read...
I strongly believe she hasn’t. Over the winter she developed more and more signs of maturity/readiness so I’d been expecting an egg from her when Spring came… Brahmas are late bloomers I’ve heard and she is a Dark Brahma mix.
There are 3 hens (her included) and 1 roo. Grower feed for everyone...
