A friend of mine has a male runner duck. He is not well..swollen belly and very watery droppings..lack of appetite.
he also seems to be limping, and has a sore on the foot..but this may be unrelated to the swollen belly..
what could this be?
I know something about chickens..but not ducks...
could be exposure to dusts...
I've been hearing some chickens have shown a sensitivity to pine shavings..but it's rare..
what all do you feed?
describe the droppings in detail..color and consistency..
you can take her to a vet if you're able to..if not..
any feed/farm/livestock supply store...
even tho little of the meds goes into the eggs...to be safe it's best to have a withdrawal time, not only for possible allergies, but for resistance build up..
you can cook up the eggs and give back to the hens..
I agree...hay is not a good choice for bedding..pine shavings is better..
best to remove and try and get some Oxine AH..to mist the birds and disinfect the coop..
describe the droppings..in detail..color and consistency.
could be cocci...
check the crops for impaction..
could they have gotten...
Steffanie...I know exactly what you mean..
I had 2 little dogs since they were 5 weeks old... they were almost 15..
one was going blind, most likely from a small stroke..
and I did everything I could...tried different meds in case it was senility..etc. etc..
I hand fed and watered him for more...
can you post a pic? or describe it in more detail?
it could be an ovary...it does happen..usually from latent infection..
if that's what it is..she needs to be watched carefully and consider an antibiotic..such as Pen-G or Baytril..
has she laid an egg since?
has she been in molt?
has she...
clean with saline solution to remove any debris. (available at any pharmacy or you can make your own with 1 cup water and 1/4 teaspoon salt..cook to boil for a few minutes, let cool)
then disinfect with diluted Betadine or Providone Iodine..let dry, and apply regular neosporin and cover..gauze...
how are her droppings? color and consistency?
if they are watery or runny..show pink or tan..she could have cocci..
is there any foam? yellow or mustard color? mucusy?
has she been wormed? if so, when? and what was used?
maybe she just needs some extra protein and vitamins..
growing new...
Steffanie..you're doing all you can for your Paris..
try not to second guess yourself..
it's hard when they get sick and we wonder what we could have done differently to prevent it..
It's as hard on us as it is on them.
I lost a special hen (my first small flock)some years ago, before I knew...
I just saw your question about the Baytril..I think it comes in injectable, oral and pills.
might be worth considering.
but keep in mind that she'll need a good probiotic...not to be given in conjunction with oral or pills since it would interfere with absorption..anytime with injectable..
she...
anytime there is swelling of the head..suspect some form of respiratory illness...including sinusitis..
treat aggressively with the Tylan..
here is a link to instructions for treating/flushing infected sinuses and eyes...
what antibiotic did you give?
my choice for respiratory illness is Tylan..or erythromycin..(gallimycin)
Tylan comes in injectable..(best IMO)..and water soluble powder...as does the gallimycin..
describe the droppings..in detail (including the rooster)..color and consistency
have they been...
how is the hen now?
what all do you feed?
what bedding do you use?
describe the droppings in detail..color and consistency.
has she been wormed? if so when? and what was used?
