    Too soon for brooder plate

Thank you so much. Seems to be fluffing up a little more. She isn't extremely sensitive there, hard to tell because chicks are a little hypersensitive anyway, but I don't want to be touching that area too much. Thanks again.

    Too soon for brooder plate

I put newly hatched chicks from incubator to brooder with a brooder plate. One of the chicks was still a little moist. Later, I noticed the back/head feathers were singed. Learning curve, I now know. I feel so bad not keeping the chick in incubator longer. The chick seems okay. I raised the...

Review by 'Sandy-Acton' in article 'Grass for Chickens-Taking a look at the natural health benefit provided by this everyday green'

Thank you for your article. We had let all our grass die off because of water restrictions here in Southern California. We decided to lay a couple rolls of sod in the chicken run to give them greens to eat, they seem much happy for it. They keep the grass short, so we don't need to mow. Having 9...

Hen determines egg color? Maybe, not.

Thank you so much for info. I have raised chickens for eggs only since the 90's. The last couple years I experienced roosters. Another whole world of chicken communication and rituals. Then, I tried incubation, got 5 chicks out of 8 eggs. So exciting. Then I got a broody hen and tried that. Only...

Hi and Hello, I am very pleased with my 5 month old mix, BCM x Buff Brahma pullet, recently began laying dark brown eggs. I had bought two BCM chicks, told they were female, turned out to be roosters. I had been reading up on egg color of crossbreeds. I was disappointed from internet reads...

    Slipped tendon?

Sad news. Nemo was still running around, same condition, never improved. I was at the hospital with my ailing husband and thought I would be home in time to lock up chickens before dark. I did a chicken count, but unsure of the babies under mom. This morning I found Nemo's remains outside the...

Topic of the Week - What do/can you do with unwanted roosters?

I sell my roo's. Last year, I sold my roo's for $10. Hoping if someone paid that money for 4 month old roo's, that they would not be food. This year, I sold a one year old and 3 four month olds. One lady took 3 birds, I am hoping that $10 was enough, to not be culled. :(She was the only person...
