I have a young hen thathas gone broody again. 3 rd time since summer. Id like to break her of it now, but with nights getting down in the low teens I hesitate to cage her alone with out bedding. Last time it took 4 days in the cage.
So 2 xs a day at least I go out and take her off the nest...
I'm in Ohio near Toledo. The hens are all 2 yrs this April. My Orp started to molt just before we got that frigid weather. I put a heat lamp in for her and she has faired quite well, I think. I gave her extra scratch esp at night and I have dried minnows that she loves. This is her first molt...
I have 3 hens, 2 Buckeyes and one Lavender Orpington. My Orp. Was the only hen laying but Went into a full moult.. she stopped laying, she still looks pretty bad but she does have new feather growth. So for the last 2 days I’ve had 1 egg each day, first a light brown then a slightly darker...
Sorry for not answering, I don’t hang out here as often as I’d like, and am new to figuring out messages and replying. Yes I am a quilter. I found this online and have wanted to make it since then, but no time.
I have been having a similar problem, My 6 hens are 10 months old and one day I will get 2 eggs and the next maybe 4 or five. Very rarely 6 in one day, then we are back to only 2. I called the hatchery where I got the chicks and was told they need 2 main things to lay, protein and calcium...
My roo has some minor frostbite too. It’s been warmer , more average temps the last week, but before that minus 5 and such. ThNks for the advice. I’ll keep an eye on him.
Thank you everyone for your advice. I’ll watch them closer and double check that there are no predators getting in. I guess this is the down side to chickens. They’ve been so much a pleasure until now.
This is him, and the 2 Bantams are behind. He is pretty big, but I’ve not seen him being aggressive toward any of the girls. I’m sure it wasn’t a raccoon or opossum, there would have been muscle damage, and /or more blood and carnage. She was not eaten at all. I’m sorry I didn’t take any...
I have an English setter that we hunt pheasants with. So when I got chickens I figured that I’d have some loss before he understood, but that wasn’t the case. The chickens came to me full grown from a friend who also sent the coop. When I first introduced then to each other he was very...
I have 4 hens ( 2 Banties,an Americana, and a silken). All about 2 yrs old and a young rooster 5 months. Last night when I locked up the coop I noticed that one of my Little Banties was missing. This morning I found her in the coop dead under some leaves pretty beat up. Her back feathers torn...
i have a hen who is sitting on an empty nest . I had a fake egg in the nest to encourage my girls to lay there. And they do but One of my hens started to sit all day and not leave the nest. So I removed the fake egg and Each day I take her off the nest and each night I find her there again...
One of the Banties started sitting about 4 days befor I got the fertilized eggs, and now the Americana has decided she should hatch a few also. But I don't want more than the possible 3. And the down side to have it 2 hens nesting is theloss of egg laying for 3 weeks. On the up side I am...
