Any ideas why this chick has ratty feathers like this? Silver Spangled Appenzeller Spitzhauben. The other 15 chicks look normal. We did have to nurse it back to life when it arrived from shipping, but it's 2 weeks old now. A picture of the chick and of a normal feathered chick.
I wouldn't be doing any meds since if they don't need them, it'll be too hard on their bodies. We prefer hydrohen electrolytes and so do our hens, they won't touch the purina one. Feed with a dropper if needed. Do they show signs of respiratory issues? Vet rx probably isn't helpful otherwise...
Sorry if these are doubles or triples, I didn't read through all the others. 😂 In our first year, this has been what has been essential for us:
Hydrohen
Colloidal silver
Peroxide
Nonstick wound pads
Self adhesive 1 inch wrap (pictured)
Styptic stick or powder
Razor sharp scissors
Vet Rx...
We set up a small cooler with a nitrogen hose hooked to the emptying port. He welds, so we always have nitrogen available. We covered her eyes and wrapped her in a comfy blanket so she was comfortable and not struggling and put her in the cooler. It was obviously still dark so she didn't move...
I'm so sorry for your loss. We don't have vets around here that will see chickens and definitely none for house calls. You're definitely lucky with that. We used nitrogen to put down one of our girls last year and that will be our method. I cannot make my pets bleed. It sounds like they were...
We give all sorts of treats year round, but it's fun to cook for them! I made some plain pinto beans and they LOVED them. They really love oats with fruit though. We also do tuna every now and again because I can't stomach giving them eggs. 😂
We have one silver Appenzeller (named Nightlight) from a variety pack of chicks and she is our favorite, hands down. She is so sweet and quirky. She couldn't care less about the pecking order and just want to forage around and do her own thing. She is very skiddish partly because of her crest...
Yep. We've mostly decided that's what they are. Some have darker legs than I think they should have for Calis (the more the spots, the darker the legs it seems for ours), but it's definitely the most accurate. We do have a Splash Andalusian and they have similar body shapes and sizes, but she...
Mine have been doing the same and are now 20 weeks. Some started laying at 18 weeks. Some lost some of black/gray. First full molt will be interesting.
They look really fancy right?! According to the website (The Assorted White Egg Layer assortment is based on availability and will not include meat birds of any kind, or brown egg layers. The breeds may be a mixture of the following: Ancona, Brown Leghorn, Andalusian, California White, White...
She was pure yellow with yellow legs as a chick and has a single comb. 🤔 She does have splashes of gray and black all throughout, but they're harder to see in sunlight. We also got an Appenzeller Spitzhauben even though she wasn't supposed to be an option. So we are at a loss. Thanks for your...
