I raised one from an egg and the runner I bought when she was 1 from a farm, so maybe that’s why she is less hardy than my mallard! I didn’t give them any yeast, I didn’t know anything about this… will have to research. Yes I give them oyster shells, I’ll make it a regular thing too
He didn't say he did anything to raise her blood calcium levels before implants. As for the bacterial load I get the impression it is small, they're not specific, but just say I need to go buy antibiotics.
I think I may need to look for another vet, as these guys don't specialise with ducks...
Thanks ruthhope, do you ever get concerned about e.coli or treat it? I know nothing about e.coli.
I knew she had egg/calcium problems because she lays weak/broken eggs sometimes which I think can be life threatening. The vet also showed me an x-ray and said she has low bone density. Other than...
Hi all,
I have been taking my runner duck and mallard to the bird vet every 6 months for checkups - especially because my runner suffers from low calcium and needs an implant every 6 months to stop her laying eggs.
However this is not the only problem, it seems they both always have something...
Hi everyone, I have a year old female mallard who I raised from an egg and she is very much imprinted in myself and my family. We got her another female runner duck of similar age to be her friend in our backyard.
Recently our mallard has started acting very irritable and making a loud, hoarse...
We haven’t been going to her at all when she quacks... so I have no idea why she still carries on all day. Her friend is perfectly happy and chases flies and eats grass all day. I’m not sure how to tell if they’ve bonded, my duck will still follow any human around even if it means leaving the...
Update: almost 4 weeks later and the quacking is no better... it might actually be getting worse 😞 and she seems to just be cranky all the time now even when she’s been let out and has fresh food/water/swimming water. If she glimpses us through a window (we have to have the blinds drawn most of...
They are in a very safe coop that is “built for about 6 chickens to live permanently” as the place we bought it from said. The only problem is I work full time and don’t feel safe leaving them out unsupervised all day... my mum will let them out for a few hours but that’s the best we can do. The...
Thank you!! Would you suggest keeping them in the coop mostly (it’s been storming and very hot here in Australia) to get them used to it or bringing them outside as much as possible? But when we do take them out my duck cries unless I stay outside 😓
I have had a single duck I found as an egg for 12 weeks now and due to a bunch of circumstances (having to temporarily surrender her to WIRES because they thought she was a native, 2 different coop shipments being cancelled/delayed/sent to the wrong address/parts missing) we have only just got...
