I have a small flock, so I have only one Buff Orpington, but I'm really glad that I have her. She has been a good and consistent egg-layer. She is also very good with new younger birds added to the flock - never any aggression, and she tends to watch over them like a mother would until they are...
I'm so sorry for your loss of Woo. What a great bird he was to protect your hens. I wish we could have a rooster here where I am, but they don't allow them.
Hi Mindanao. No more sign of the creature as of late, so I'm not sure if we will ever find out what it was at this point. It's interesting that you mention it may be a coyote or fox, as we do have those around here too. I wish we could have caught whatever it was to be certain it was gone for...
Nope, unfortunately, these are not the windows on our coop - just a photo I found online to illustrate the hinges. I hope you've found something that works.
Leslielbk, That is exactly what I thought when I started to see these bite marks and bent links. It's scary to think that something that can do this to a metal fence is roaming around our yard at night. Thankfully, we have not seen any new damage the last two days/nights. We've been setting the...
No sign of any repeat visit again last night. I hope the creature finally gave up trying to gnaw its way in. Will update if anything new happens or eventually gets trapped.
It was only recently that I learned raccoons will go after koi fish in residential ponds. I was out buying some plants at our local nursery where they also sell koi, and I spoke with a woman who had recently lost two of her koi due to a raccoon. Prior to that, she had lost other fish to a bald...
Thank you, Jeria. The one in the foreground is "Emily" (red star) - she is the go-getter of the two and she just turned five weeks. The one in the background is "Bella" (buff orpington) - she is seven weeks old now, very docile and more laid-back. I had to introduce Emily to the coop a bit...
Just wanted to add a thank you to you guys for all the suggestions and well wishes regarding our situation. Here is a pic of our two little birds that we are trying to protect...
I hope these images show up. It appears as though the creature did not make a third attempt overnight. We have neighbors setting off fireworks late into the night, so maybe that has temporarily spooked it. The pics don't show the extent of the bending between, as we did bend them back as best as...
LOL, I am actually kind of concerned about going out in the yard early in the morning or at night now because I've been imagining a similar scenario! I am sorry I kept you guys waiting for an update. No tracks of any kind seen this morning, but more bite marks and bent links in the fence were...
It's funny that you mention the mud puddles. I just came back from outside after throwing a pile of wet garden soil around the area where this thing tried to break in. I am going to check in the morning to see if there are any tracks to help me identify what it is.
