My pitbull is super cool with my chickens and ducks. I think it's more about the dogs personality and training than the breed though. He did try to play with them in his own goofy non-graceful way as a puppy and I would say " No chickens". After a few times he just became one of the flock 😁
I buy bags of whole grains and mix my own. It's cheaper and the hens love it cause it's so fresh! I don't know where you are located... there might be a local mill.. or I get my grains from Azure Standard.
I'm in WA as well... it was raining so hard today! I have a roof that overhangs a little on my coop and run; and probably a foot thick wood chips inside and on the ground outside. I passed by a company chopping down a tree in the neighborhood and gave them my address in case they needed a dump...
The inside of my coop and run are just regular ground (with deep deep wood chips/shavings). I put the hardware cloth (1/2" wire) on the ground outside, but I also buried it. So you can't see it and although it would definitely be possible for one of the chickens to dig all the way down to it...
My pleasure! I found that the critters would dig right at where the wall met the ground,... They tried all around the coop for many nights. But they kept hitting the wire and gave up. I have the wire completely covered with wood chips so they couldn't see where it ended. So far so good!
Anywhere there's not solid wood or roofing material my coop has 1/2" wire. Plus I dug out 3 feet from the outside walls and buried 1/2" wire. My goal was to beat the rats! I WON! Maybe something similar would work for you?
hahaha yeah, his thumbs are so long they have knuckles just like ours
I do the same,.. keep them away from the kitty until they are too big to be tasty treats!
