If you're collecting eggs every day and you have some fertilized eggs, does refrigeration stop the development process? Is the fertilized egg usable for consumption?
Vetracin spray available at Tractor supply. Accelerates healing on any animal. Lost 3 great layers to a bobcat, actually climbed up a tree over a 6' fence and over the electric wires I have to keep canines away - stole 3 until I figured it out. My coops are predator proof when the door is...
I've done it at 3-4 weeks also. I have a portable run that keeps them corralled - but they love chasing insects and picking at the grass. They get a few hours per day if not too hot. Also provide water.
It can be an inexpensive hobby if you let them range and put together coops from scrap material. We tend to get a surplus of eggs, which we give away to friends and family, but we get a free comedy show.
I think available perch space is also important to them. Seems if there's "excess" linear perch space there's less to fight about. I added more linear feet of perch in my latest coop so will test the theory with our new flock.
I was always interested to know what happens when you have your chickens actually hatch their eggs - is it typically a high mortality or do the mother hens protect the young? Do you have to constantly watch them?
