Of all the answers, in the end. . . TODAY!, I did just what you suggested. . . "solve for peace in the flock".
Big dog presented himself with an opportunity to grab his legs from the roost and that was all she wrote. Stew.
Thanks for your and all folks input.
Now we are left with five...
Which one should I cull?
We have 3 legacy hens who all get along, 18 mos old(Rosie, Sparky, and Goldie). This summer 3 new chicks from a neighbor farm hatched out and they are not happy in their home here. Scarred to death of the 3 hens. They are:
2 roosters and one hen— unnamed. I decide...
Thanks for all the suggestions.
She IS exactly 18 mo old, so maybe we should see some improvement from that alone, great.
Run is about 10 x 12 with six chickens; + coop is about 7ft square, 2 nests. Two young roosters but one will not be long in this world. So, only five shortly. The other...
Our favorite hen, Rosie, lost a bunch of feathers from Red the Rooster riding her too much this spring and then lost more on her back. . . maybe from Sparky pecking her, who knows. . . Anyway, I was hoping some one out here could recommend some special potion to help her feathers regrow. . . it...
I just started raising chickens a year ago. Not a pro.
Anyway, my coop is relatively small(7' square) and I started out with two nesting boxes. Then, I lowered it and they STILL would not USE it. So, I cut it in half(one box) and removed the special plastic commercial nest with an angled...
they work great and are relatively cheap.
They have accumulation boxes and you can just dump them out, dead, for your chickens. GOOD idea. I have one, and might do that this year.
YES, but you need to learn how to be the alpha. A couple of weeks ago I saw a woman on Utube showing how. . . search.
Here is what she did as she explained, pretty cool:
-- grabbed the rooster from behind and picked him up by his shoulders in the air, walked around a bit as she talked.

This one hen has one bent-under toe on each foot; she is 6 mo old and fully grown. She walks just fine and does not appear to be in any pain or problem walking. When I bent one back straight she does not seem to be bothered so it seems I could try a splint of some sort. I understand I can...
OK, this is just crazy. My wife is out in the hard driving snow trying to herd the chickens back into the coop-- worried their little feet will freeze off. Well, hey. This is the first snowfall of the Minnesota season and it is still 32°F outside for cryin' out loud. Maybe at 10 or 15...
It does seem to be quite reliable and we are never worried about where the chickens are around dusk or dawn. They just know to be inside plenty early and wait for the door to open before marching out. Pretty painless.
I have a small 4'x 6' coop for 6 hens; mounted above same footprint for the run(just ground). Planning on using wood shavings for the coop but will use your suggestion above to improve odor there. Coop has plywood floor, so not planning on sand there but sand makes sense for the run.
Do...
The best thing to do is to buy this book:
"Raising Chickens", by Gail Damerow. . .
and READ it.
Then, build your own. Or, in your case, tear it down and start over as necessary . . .
Good Luck!
