Meat for chickens; yes or no??

Our chickens will eat cat food whenever they get the chance, so I mix the powder from the bottom of the cat biscuits bag in with their "porridge"... They catch mice in the coops - big treat! They have also been seen catching and eating baby snakes! You can absolutely see just how little...

    Muscovy drake name

We have rehomed a Muscovy drake this year and he's earned himself the name Darth (as in Vader for the heavy breathing πŸ˜‚) Brooks (cos he's such a Star ⭐ with his quiff!)... Party πŸŽ‰πŸ₯³ trick - if you say "Dude" to him, he'll put his quiff up! Super cool! He loves eating corn 🌽, snails 🐌, and...

Poll Time: Cool the Coop & Chickens

We had a month of 40Β°C / 104Β°F days last summer! I helped the flock stay cool by changing all the water 3 or 4 times a day, adding ice during the hottest part of the day. A shade cloth over the open coop window that was wetted down a couple of times a day. Wet cloths on the tin roofs of the...

Thank you for such an informative article! πŸ™πŸΌπŸ’œπŸ™πŸΌπŸ’œπŸ™πŸΌ We have recently homed a Muscovy drake as he was pining after the chickens he lived with were taken away, and he was getting himself in harms way in the village he lived in. So now he's got a wee cabin (we're going to make a bigger, better...

Official BYC Poll: How Do You Protect Your Chickens From Predators?

Our Flock free ranges during the day, all of the coops are secure with perimeter fencing and locked doors. We have about a dozen roosters and about 3 dozen hens. We have occasional losses due to foxes, pine martens, hawks will take chicks if they can and the last hen was eaten by a stray hunt...

    What's your flock's favorite treat?

We have a Red Eared Terrapin who only eats prawns 🦐 but the prawns we get in the shops here in the south of France are too big for her to eat... So we take the heads off the prawns and freeze them, they make THE BEST treat ever!!! And it's really funny watching the chickens grab one and run...

A fun question on naming your chickens.

Great Post πŸ“―! πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚ Our Flock grew from 2 hens (Matron and Blanche) to a maximum of 60 birds over 2 years so they don't all have names... If they have spent time in the house, they will have a name! Baby-Baby (original rooster who I didn't want to give a proper name to in case he had to...

Hawk attack? Can someone help determine what tried to kill my girls yesterday? What else should I do? BYC link below saved my girls life!

Sorry your birds got attacked! Chickens are amazingly tough creatures and can survive some extreme injuries! 😁 πŸ’ͺ🏽 πŸ” πŸ“ We had a hen attacked by a pine marten last year, she lost a 3" square piece of flesh between her shoulders! She spent about 6 weeks in the house being nursed and has returned...

    chicken moving

When I move chicks and hens between coops, I leave them shut in the new location for a week, that's usually long enough for them to realise where the new home is... First couple of evenings after they're free, usually requires a gentle guided walk in... Definitely helps if they are going back...
