It works but it does take an observant eye and a little practice. I use a magnet on a string. I DO NOT HOLD the string myself, I attach It to an inanimate object and I use it on eggs. Sometimes I am 100% and sometimes I hatch one or two more boys than I had intended it to an inanimate object and...

She’s my only isbar hen :hit
I do have chicks from someone else but they are only a month old. Hopefully the rooster isn’t a lost cause. If this stupid Marans hen would end her laying strike I can find out!
Yes. I candle everything before it goes in the incubator. Shell quality is great! Even a hairline crack or porous shell shouldn’t produce this gelatinous muck in under 24 hours from being laid. The egg pictured was at most 18 hours old!
I’ve hatched my own eggs and those of others. I’ve hatched close to 200 chicks this year (in my Brinsea incubators). There are no Isbar eggs locally to buy and that’s what I need. I’m also about to become NPIP so I have limited local sources to buy from anyway. Also, rooster fertility does drop...
I have seen people ask about this before, so far no answers! I have one isbar hen that I have been trying to get chicks from. She is in with just one rooster as a pair, I bought them a couple months ago. Every egg I have tried to incubate has been a dud. I figured it was probably the 3yo rooster...
I have a bunch of new highly rated hygrometers that I initially put together to see which where most consistent with each other and decided that the ones that agreed the most must be most accurate. This week I took a trip to the lab of our family business and borrowed a calibrated industrial...
The humidity in my house is around 50% but with no water in the bator it got down to 10% and that just seemed too low. Even about a teaspoon of water bumped up humidity to 50%. I have had a real difficult time regulating humidity in this thing. I really don’t like stressing over these...
Ok, I’ve kept humidity between generally 35-50%, sometimes dipping to 25% the whole time. It’s day 17 and these air sacs look too small to me. This is my first hatch, so maybe I’m wrong but I’m worried about my peepers! If they are too small, what can I do to save them? Am I too late? Should I...
It’s a minor case. I have had this trio for less than two weeks. I just noticed a few scales on each foot of each bird lifting up the other day. It’s not too bad yet but of course I don’t want to get out of hand and I don’t want it to infect my other birds. They are/have been in quarantine just...
So I recently picked up a trio of legbars and I have discovered that they have leg mites. I have read several of these threads on backyard chicken. I see that one of the methods is dipping in oil and that sulfur can help with the issue. Has anybody ever tried using
Shapleys M-T-G?? It’s an...
I am curious if anybody has ever tried using Shapley’s MTG For dipping the chickens legs? It is actually made for horses but it’s an oil based liquid with sulfur in it.
Ingredients: Shapley's Original M-T-G™ contains Sulfur, paraffinic distillates, petroleum distillates, zinc stearate, cade...
About 4 days ago I went out for my final night check on my animals and found one of my RIR hens (18mo old) sitting on the ground just beneath the door outside of the chicken house. She seemed lethargic but no other outward signs of illness (no discharge from nose, eyes, good color) however it...
