Thanks for the info. How old would be considered mature? He was hatched around March last year.
Maybe I'll build him a small fenced area in the coop, like I did with the new hens while they were growing.

We've two older hens and a rooster in a coop that get let out to roam our yard and woods, and 4 "chick" hens and 3 roosters that stay in a small house at night and are let into the chicken yard most days. One of the older hens is broody.

I was just wondering if anyone has ever tried designing a coop that doesn't get closed, but is still predator proof with chickens that are free ranged?
I'm thinking of somehow making a small opening like a chute large enough for chickens to get in, and having the opening about 4 or 5 feet off...
