I let my dog out this morning as the rain had stopped. He found a small clump of feathers almost immediately. I had him sniff her out.....he found, under some brush, a broken egg, another egg, and a mostly eaten duck. I'm heartbroken and I feel sick. I've never lost an animal like this.
Enclosed backyard, 3 free range ducks, dawn to dusk. I didn't get home until 11:30pm today and hadn't been home since 2:30pm. The other 2 ducks were sleeping outside their enclosure (since I'd left them out all day), and the third one is simply gone. There is a terrible storm coming through...
I love this vet. He has terrible bed side manner and he's straight to the point, so I know he's a good doc LOL. He just responded "she'll be fine". Phew. If she gets adorably sleepy I'll take a video.
I have a family crisis going on right now so I'm distracted and not sleeping. So this morning I accidentally gave Mally two 25mg Hydroxyzine pills instead of 2 antibiotic pills. Freaking out right about now. I emailed the vet.
I wasn't accusing, I was speaking from my own experience -- we waited a few weeks because my husband is more reluctant about bringing a duck to a vet, and because of that we're dealing with a bone infection instead of something less complicated.
We're on page 8 of this story now, that post was from over a month ago.
My vet said specifically not to give my duck amoxicillin orally because it risks upsetting gut bacteria -- apparently it's better if that is administered as a shot. She's been on two different antibiotics now, and after I...
No bite mark. The skin was a little open and is now covered in the lightest of scab. I can't imagine it would bleed on its own suddenly, so I'm not really sure what happened. I put iodine on the scab to see if it turns out to be growth of another bumble.
A day of rest and she's walking fine, except seems like she's trying to keep weight off the left foot. A scab of skin came off yesterday. I put iodine on to see if anything arises. If it does, she'll likely be on a trip to get the toe amputated. Either way we are probably due for a vet visit...
He said to complete the remaining pills at 2x/2x/day.
Fun development. There's a bit of blood on the dirt in their enclosure, Mally's left foot was bleeding where it's healing, and now she's limping as if her right foot is sprained. I did the Vetericyn+Neosporin to the left foot.
We've put the...
That moment I realize on day 11 out of 14 that I was supposed to give the duck 2x Clindamycin pills 2x a day and I'd only been giving her 1x pill 2x a day. Her toe is still getting smaller and her leg doesn't seem warm like it used to. I asked the vet if I should continue the antibiotic a bit...
I think the predator birds left after the 2nd day. The ducks have been keeping an eye out for them, I can tell. It looks like Mally just had a couple blood feathers attacked, she's doing fine now.
These are pics of her foot I took yesterday. Definitely seeming pretty good these days, especially...
I kept her in the crate overnight and put her back with her sisters this morning. I think it was a few blood feathers that broke. Still spraying with Vetericyn.
Quacky is squinting one eye so I sprayed Vetericyn on that after the vet emailed back telling me "spray Vetericyn on everything" lol...
Here's her foot today. The skin is loose on the bottom of the toe so I can tell there's more room in it. I couldn't cut the stitch out because her skin healed over the top of it.
Today, for the first time in their 9 months, my ducks got attacked by birds of prey. There had to be 7 total, 3 or 4 on the ground standing off against Quacky, who came away unscathed. Billy was also okay. Mally, poor Mally, was dripping blood. I think it was only a small cut (it's really...
It looks like she's been put on Clindamycin, which means I have to keep a look out for sour crop. Complications in life, lovely! I'm getting some apple cider vinegar to be proactive. Gonna fix them up a gallon of water with electrolytes/probiotics today.
I'm going to stick to washing her foot...
