I built a playpen on wheels. All sides covered except bottom. The have learned to go in when I pull up to their coop. I roll them around the yard to scratch and enjoy fresh grasses. They move along with their playpen quite well. At the end of the day we roll up to the coop door and in they march.

Some things I do: in the winter I use a large warming dog water bucket so no frozen water. In the hot Arkansas summer I freeze bottles of water and toss in their water to keep it cool. For their sand I have a 4” tall large vegetable tray. They do very well with it. Holes in the bottom keep it dry.

Great Pyrenees - to buy or not to buy?

Still a no go. I have Pyrenees. They are independent and stubborn, perfect for quick thinking guarding. Must be trained and have review of skills they don’t do often. Coming when called is one.

Official BYC Poll: How do you name your pet chickens?

I love to name them silly names: Hennifer Aniston, Meryl Peep, Atilla the Hen, etc.

How to Keep Chickens Cool in Upcoming Heat Wave?

I freeze whole kernel corn in muffin tins filled with water. I also freeze bottled water and drop one in their water. When it melts I drop another in and refreeze the first. I put up shade cloth on the sunny side of their run.

Is it ok if my chicken crop is empty?

Tractor Supply ships to home. I use Purina Layer feed. Inexpensive and well balanced.

Can a dog and chickens safely coexist in a small backyard?

We foster rescue dogs and have our own. We have many different reactions from different breeds. None really tied to a certain breed. A puppy raised with the chickens would be safest but I have great outcomes with guarding dogs like Pyrenees. I haven’t lost a chicken yet. Practice on leash...

Official BYC Poll: What Do Your Chickens Live In?

we have a hen house with two enclosed runs. Each run has different bedding for them. Some like the sand/peat mix and some like the sand/dirt. We also have a “playpen” on wheels and we roll them around the yard. At night they go single file from playpen back into their coop. It’s a sight to behold 😂

I lined my floor with peel and stick linoleum then pine shavings on top of that. Easy to clean!

Chicken won’t go in hen house at night

I have 10x20 inch windows on every side with hardware cloth covering to allow airflow from every direction. I also have drop down wooden window covers I can close and latch during winter. Their perch is high enough they can look out in the mornings watching for me to bring breakfast. Good luck...

    Need chicken environment enrichment

I bought lightweight chain at the hardware store to hang my suet feeder. With a clip I can clip it up out of the way when empty. Great for corn on the cob or sliced apples.

I also made a swing out of a small log and rope. They love it.
