    Muscovy Ducks Wings

I think it's a birth defect. Sorry. I've never seen wings like that. But, it shouldn't hurt unless she has birth defects in her egg producing parts. I've had muscovies for 5 years. Sylvia

    Duck Returning

I have a beautiful brown & white muscovy duck that I gave to a friend who wanted some. Two days later she turned back up at my house. It was about 15 miles between our places. Then I sent her to another friends that lives about 30 miles away. Again she turned up back here. I guess she is...

Are we boys or girls? Muscovy*PIC heavy update post 1 & older post 12

I have always looked at their feet. If they are born about the same time, the boys feet will be much bigger than the girls. By 4 weeks you can usually tell. But, as they grow the girls will be smaller all over than the boys. The blue is definitely a boy, but can't tell with the others. Good...

Can I use aquarium Gravel as grit for my chickens?

Just a note: I was worried about my chickens because there was a lot of glass on this property when I moved here. But, I found out that chickens can eat the glass and it comes out in their poop. I pick up anything big enough to see but they still get the little stuff. Sylvia

    Confusion Regarding Feed

Needing grit or not depends on whether they will be out where they can get grit naturally and also what you are feeding them. I bought some new organic feed that was mainly the whole grains and had severe problems because my little ones were in pens and couldn't get to natural grit. Once we...

Why wont our pullets start laying ?!?!?!?

I have Americanas and some start laying around 5 months, some not until almost 7 months. Even though they are the same breed, they each have their own time table to start laying. Just be patient, it will happen. Sylvia

Cracked corn as the only feed

My aunt, a few years ago, kept her chickens in a large pen (the were not allowed to forage except in their pen). She only fed them corn. We would take the ears of corn and chop them in sections and then take them to the chickens. The corn was what was harvested on the farm and put in a type...

    Limit their tomatoes??

Tomatoes are great and I don't think you can give them too many. I'd let them eat the treats while you have them. Sylvia

Can you buy Feed in really large quantitys?

Yes, you can buy feed in bulk from feed mills if you can find one near you. The other option is to buy grains directly from the farmers and then mix the feed yourself. You can sometimes find farmers that will sell in 50 or 100 lbs. Also, if you got together with others in your area and bought...

Feedback on Learning Center "Treats Chart"

I don't see cantaloupe on your list. After we eat the inside I take the outside out to the chickens. They attack it and eat everything but the outside skin--all the soft stuff inside is gone. Also, when I am peeling my potatoes I cook those peels and feed to the chickens. Is that okay...

    New Member From Washington State!

My name is Sylvia and I first got chickens 6 years. I have 13 laying hens and 6 that should start laying in October (raised them from babies this year). I have Americanas, but am thinking I'd like to change and get a different kind just for something new. I love the colors of the Americanas...
