    Changes in comb

Yes. She’s had no change in behavior or eating and drinking habits.

    Changes in comb

Our chickens free range the backyard and are only fenced out of the sunflower garden. She is pretty high in the pecking order; no one picks on her but we did raise their roosting bars and she had some trouble the first 2 nights getting to where she wanted so maybe that’s where the darker spots...

    Changes in comb

Hi all! This is my Easter Egger (black copper Maran cross) Hei Hei who is about 2.5 years old. She stopped laying eggs over the winter except for a few random super soft shelled eggs and hasn’t laid any eggs at all in a few months. They have free access to grower and layer food, oyster shell...

    Sad chicken, not eating

We did end up doing surgery. The object was a rubber band which I think wasn’t passing because the ends were curled. She has been doing much better but now isn’t interested in food suddenly today. She’s very upset being inside so we let her back out with the others who are accepting her pretty...

    Sad chicken, not eating

After another really good crop massage we are able to feel an oddly shaped object that feels too large to pass and I feel this is causing her problems. We are deciding whether to attempt surgery ourselves or put her out of her misery.

    Sad chicken, not eating

Her crop deflated to almost non existent after the impacted crop directions and we moved on to sour crop treatment with miconazole. Several hours later and her crop is all rocky feeling again … I sadly don’t know what to do for her anymore. She’s only 2 years old. I’ll continue the miconazole...

    Sad chicken, not eating

I followed all the instructions for impacted crop and she still has a bit of a sand bag feeling crop and is still not interested in eating anything other than dirt … I’m not sure what’s going on with her at this point. Any other thought?

    Sad chicken, not eating

She doesn’t mind the soaking at all. She just sits there and half falls asleep. I’ve felt her crop many different times of day. It’s very small and feels like one of those rocky stress balls. Is that not how it should feel? I can’t get her to eat very much at all so it doesn’t really change in...

    Sad chicken, not eating

She’s just sad, slow and quiet. Not really hanging out with the others. Not really eating. I could only get her to eat a few bites of scrambled egg. She occasionally opens her mouth like readjusting her crop but hasn’t eaten. I tried giving her some epsom salt and warm water soaks just in...

Adding to mama hen with 2 week old chicks

That’s what everyone says! Haha! But she was still defending her chicks when they were 4 months old and they were still hanging out as their own little family group. (She raised them with the rest of our small flock)

Adding to mama hen with 2 week old chicks

Even if she took care of her chicks until 3.5-4 months old last year? She seems to consider them hers to care for for awhile. But I do understand if I should just wait. I really appreciate the input.

Adding to mama hen with 2 week old chicks

We lost 2 chicks (1 last night and 1 this morning), which brings us down to 4 chicks. They were hatched by a broody hen and she is amazing at raising baby chicks. I’m concerned with the 4 left that we could end up with only 1 hen since we aren’t allowed roosters. They are about 2 weeks old now...

    Coop remodel with broody hen

Just looking for input here. Please and thank you! We are doing a simple remodel to the coop that will only take about a days work. The coop is currently only big enough for 6-7 chickens. We have 6 hens and 1 is sitting on 7 eggs that are all developing nicely! The eggs have been sat on by her...

    Broody hen 1 month plus

Her eyes are great! I don’t know why the photo makes it look like there’s something wrong. She puffs up and is aggressive (mildly) to the other chickens when they come to lay). She growls a lot and has some screeches when others get too close. She hasn’t laid in over 4 weeks. Her crop...

    Broody hen 1 month plus

We did try the cool bath too which didn’t work any better than taking her out of the coop. We’re considering getting her some 1 day old chicks since she’s been broody so long already I didn’t think eggs were the best idea in case she decides suddenly that she’s done being broody. Thank you for...
