Hen with head injury, possible neurological damage?

I was wondering about that but feared it would stress/shock her little body. She just died a few minutes ago. She was starting to look better, ever so slightly, during the night and swallowed some water at one point but when I went to give her some nutrition this morning she panicked, struggled...

Hen with head injury, possible neurological damage?

Thank you, I'll see what I can get into her tomorrow morning. She just started screaming in the dark bathroom so I checked on her. Her head looks more swollen than before. The bobbing/jerking has improved significantly but I'm kinda freaked out by the swelling and the screaming. She stopped...

Hen with head injury, possible neurological damage?

I just found my 8 year old hen on the floor with a head injury. I didn't see what happened but I'd guess roosters. She's been bobbing her head over and over (see video) the entire time. Her "sense of balance" system must be injured? I cleaned the wound, managed to give her a couple sips of...

    Late-blooming cockerel or surprise pullet?

This little guy is 12 weeks old and I had his hatchmates ID'd weeks ago but he's either a late bloomer (I've had a few over the years) or actually not a boy. (He's half BLR Wyandotte and half, uh, let's call his bio mother a black sex-link Marans/Sebright.) These are the best pictures I'm...

    White Crested Black Polish Question

Apologies for necroposting but it took me a lot of googling to find this thread and it's exactly what I was looking for! Has anyone done more work/research/breeding in the past four years to confirm the hypothesis that white-crested is allelic to mottling? I have a white-crested blue polish...

Oh silly me, I told my husband we have 44 chickens when ACTUALLY we only have... 3!

Comment by 'shanadienne' in article 'Guide to Letting Broody Hens Hatch and Raise Chicks'

If you're considering using a broody as an incubator and then raising the chicks yourself: Chicks learn to recognize their mother's voice days before hatching so I don't separate hens from eggs they hatch. Otherwise they CRY. I don't like to hear it and I don't like to put them through that...

Official BYC Poll: Special Needs Poultry

I think it depended on how he was feeling that day and whether there were real hens immediately available. :D

Official BYC Poll: Special Needs Poultry

Sadly we lost him to a predator some years ago but you'll probably like this video I have of him back in 2018. My darling Hei-Hei. Physically he recovered great. Mentally... he was Hei-Hei and we loved him.

Official BYC Poll: Special Needs Poultry

Back in 2017 I had one hen about to hatch 10+ eggs and 3 or 4 more broody hens so I decided to split the eggs up among the birds right before lockdown. Unfortunately one of those hens did not like the chick that hatched underneath her, picked him up by the scalp, and flung him out of the nest. I...

    For the chicken sociologists

So, I love observing my chickens but I am also a real nerd about them and since I couldn't find any scientific papers on this I'll pose this question to the community: Have you noticed your roosters (especially young extra hormonal cockerels) show preference for certain hens in your flock, such...

    Is my asymmetrical gander okay?

All this time I assumed my goose Gerry had stretched out her body from laying eggs. Now I know she's just a petite lady with thunder thighs. (Me too, Gerry!)

    Is my asymmetrical gander okay?

I googled "goose paunch" as soon as I read your comment and what a freaking relief! Thank you!! I feel silly for having researched keeping geese before getting them but not having heard of it! Thank goodness, this is like finding out chickens' crops look like like they have a massive tumor on...

    Is my asymmetrical gander okay?

My goose which I think is a gander (he's only like 3 and half months old so idk if there is a more correct term) has developed half of a... FUPA if I may use that term and if I may not use that term his foster mother, a 1.5 year old production Toulouse goose, has the same "saggy" feathers/flesh...

    Itchy baby chick????

Welp, another Polish chick has started acting "itchy." Her umbilical area is fluffy, I can't even see anything there, but she did start to develop pasty butt. I'll try to get some vitamins/electrolytes in her and keep her vent clear but I really don't know what to think now.
