    Giving the quail "treats"

I have been living with Celiac's now for over 7 years, so I know all the usual (and unusual!) sources. :) The brand is Kruse, and it is their 30% protein turkey/gb starter. My local feed store ordered it in for me, comes in the usual 50 lb bag. The only thing I don't like is that it is...

Thoughts on my homemade brooder? Pic

Nice looking brooder box! Mine is approximately the same height and sq footage, just a rectangle instead of square, and 12 coturnix chicks fit in it quite nicely for the first 2 to 2.5 weeks. (Moved them to their big cage at just shy if 3 weeks old, but kept a 40 watt red bulb above them and...

Southern AZ or southern NM? Want some young roos?

Just my luck. Out of the eleven day-olds I started with last month, I ended up with only 4 hens. :/ Anyone here from southern AZ or southern NM who would like 7 healthy young roos? I am keeping my quail for egg production, so need the hens only. I am one of those weenies who can't (under normal...

    Giving the quail "treats"

I checked the ingredient label on the GB starter mix I am feeding my little stinkers...no gluten! One less source of potential contamination to worry about. :)

    Giving the quail "treats"

I hadn't even thought to check the label of their feed for gluten - thanks for that! (I am Celiac, husband is G-intolerant.) The general assumption everyone makes when they start having reflux problems is that they have too much acid, and take a Rx acid suppressor/OTC antacid, etc. Turns out...

    Giving the quail "treats"

Oh wow - great to know! DH uses ACV to keep his acid reflux under control, and I use it a lot for my gluten free baking needs. Now I can use it to help with the odor from my little indoor flock? Awesome. :) Btw - on the subject of treats, how early is too early to start with treats of any sort...

    Giving the quail "treats"

Are there any foods that are absolute no-no's? When we had a pair of cockatiels, the vet told us chocolate and avacados were on the 'do not' list...

    Roos or no roos?

Thank you very much for clarifying - it will definitely mean less poo to clean up and the bags of feed will last me longer. Although I have to admit a little part of me was hoping for a slightly different answer. Being my first flock and having raised them from day one, I have gotten very...

    Roos or no roos?

I have recently started with my first quail in the form of some day-olds from a local quail/pheasant breeder. They are 3 weeks old today, and already starting to color out so I know I have at least two roosters out of the 11 chicks I started with. It is almost heartbreaking how fast they go from...

Are eggs from Jumbo Coturnix larger than eggs from regular Coturnix japonica?

I would be interested in finding out the answer to this question as well - I am getting started with quail specifically for the eggs. (Husband and I can neither one eat chicken eggs, but quail eggs are fine.)

Storing quail eggs in the fridge... containers?

I just found 10-packs of quail eggs at a big Asian grocery store here in town - they are clear plastic and look like chicken egg cartons, just really tiny. They were only $1.69 per pack, so I bought several and once they are empty will be using them to store eggs that my birds lay. They have the...

    My new quail babies.

I just can't get over how cute they are! It is so sad they grow out of the fuzzball stage so quickly. Let me know how the fuzzy buddy works out - we had a cockatiel for a number of years, and she loved hers. Actually, we had to take it away eventually. She was fixating on it to the point of...
