    Shrinking Eggs???????

Weather permitting, I'm going to treat for mites this weekend when I clean the coop. I'm going to spray the coop. What would be a good dust to get for the chickens? I have sevin dust but not sure about using it on the chickens.

    Reasons for Poor Hatch Rate

These were not eggs from a hatchery. They came from baby chicks that we ordered last spring (got 'em in April). We started collecting their eggs 1st week of Feb. this year for hatching (collected for about 5 days). Some of the chicks were fully developed but did not hatch. Some eggs were not...

    Reasons for Poor Hatch Rate

In one run there are Buff Orps, and RIR with a Buff Orp roo. In the other run there are EE's, Brown Leghorns & Black Australorps with a EE roo. They have free choice of 16% layer crumbles + we give them a little bit of scratch each day so I don't think malnutrition would be the cause.

    Reasons for Poor Hatch Rate

The Eggs were not shipped. We bought baby chicks and received them in April 2010. We were trying to hatch the eggs we are getting from those pullets.

    Reasons for Poor Hatch Rate

Last year we received some banty chickens from our neighbor. We hatched 2 out of 3 eggs first time around. A month later, we hatched 13 out 16 banty for ourselves & 5 out of 5 for another neighbor. We received baby chicks from a hatchery April 2010 and the hatch rate on those eggs is awful. 5...

    Shrinking Eggs???????

Could any of you experienced egg masters out there give me some answers as to why our eggs are shrinking? We have Buff Orps, RIR, EE, Brown Leghorns, Black Australorps. We were getting mostly Large and Extra Large eggs. Now we are getting mostly Medium to Large. Any ideas why this could happen...

I want to build a brooder.

Do you have a brooder lamp? If not you may want to make a trip to the hardware store. I did not have enough scraps to completely make my brooder. Instead of going with a regular clamp-on brooder lamp, I made my own using a porcelin light fixture - ($1.57 @ Lowe's), a pvc junction box (.97), a...

I want to build a brooder.

If you decide to go ahead and build your own you may want put a vinyl floor covering over your plywood floor. It's easy to clean and would be a moisture barrier if you decide to put sand in there.

I want to build a brooder.

I built one last year. It was a 4x4 brooder, 23 inches tall with 2 light fixtures hooked to a dimmer switch (to vary the temp) with a long cord that plugs into the wall. Looking back I would have probably designed it a little differently and not made it square (you have to turn it on it's side...

    Bad Hatching Experience

Has anyone ever experienced a chick hatching with it's insides out? Last year we hatched several with no problems. This year we decided to hatch some eggs from our BO's that we ordered from a hatchery, The one that hatched earlier today came out in this sad condition. Any thoughts?

How Many Eggs Did You Get Today?

19 today and it was sleeting & snowing today with temps in the upper 20's. Weather forecast calls for single digit lows tonight. The last time the temps were that low the girls laid 24 eggs and 2 days later we set a record of 27. Maybe it will happen again.
