I make sprouted alfalfa seeds and sprouted lentils for my girls and handfeed them to my girls daily. I put apple cider vinegar in their water. I read 1 ml daily per bird helps repel parasites and helps with their immune system. I feed my girls fermented feed twice daily and have dry crumbles...
If you save a little bit of your batch each day and add more water and feed, it only needs to ferment a minimum of 12 hours. This enables you to feed it the next day. You don't need to wait the 3 days if you choose this method.
My lavender orpington just started laying a month ago and started having a poop bottom. I cleaned her up, but right away there was a trace of poo again. Should I trim her feathers, deworm her, or change her feed. I did change the feed about a month ago around the time she started laying.
If it is just the scum on top before you stir, it is fine. Does it actually look like mold? Mine was in a cooler cabinet and was always fine being stirred once per day. Now it is in a little warmer cabinet and gets a little more scum on top but smells fine. I still stir once per day. I do the 3...
You either start a batch daily and wait 3 days rotating through the three batches, or some do the backslopping method where you save a little of what is fermented and just add equal parts of water and dry feed waiting a minimum of 12 hours for it to ferment, so you can feed it the next morning...
My chickens happen to love the yellow peas in their feed. They eat those out all the time and used to throw the pellets everywhere. I started putting the dry feed in a taller corningware dish. Now they eat the peas out because they can see them, yet they don't throw out the pellets. I just keep...
Bearcreekbees, what exact feed do you ferment? Do you worry about making sure it is organic/non-gmo? I bought corn free/soy free not only because we are all sensitive to them, but also because I read that chickens can't process them so they get deposited directly in their eggs. I'd love to hear...
Thank you! I do sprout lentils and feed them as treats. All my girls love them! May I ask what kind of feed you purchase to ferment? You mentioned pellets. Is that what you ferment? If I don't add oyster shells, the egg shells were really thin. It doesn't seem like they eat the oyster shells...
Thank you so much! What do you store the mixed dry feed in? Do you only feed the fermented food? My chickens waste the dry feed and eat the peas out. I've been feeding fermented food daily, but I've given dry food on the side. Today I dumped some of the fermented food on the ground, and...
My name is Shelly, and I live in Fort Collins, Colorado. We have 5 chickens and are loving it. Our sweet girls are Jasmine, Emerald (Emmy), Lavender, Calico (Cali), and Princess Buttercup.
Hi, everyone!
I am new here. I have been reading posts for a while and have started fermenting my chicken feed. Thanks for all the great information!
Initially, I fed my chicks a mash starter feed that had some corn but was soy free. I later gave them a mash layer feed that contained corn but...
