I have a 5 year old barred rock who started losing feathers early summer but they won't grow back on her back, breast and around the wings. It doesn't appear to be a normal molt. Now she seems unbalanced. Never saw this before
I've had chickens for 8 winters but have never had temps dropping this cold in my area. They are predicting -15 friday nite/sat morning. My girls (12) are in two coops, 2 feet off the ground with plenty of wood chip litter ( and poop!). The ventilation is good and they're dry and draft free...
I have the same issue with a 10 month old sex link. I came in here looking for ideas. She seems ok, but has poopy butt, pale comb and very underweight. Do we think she needs worming? Could it be anything else?
I've raised baby chicks numerous times but this was the first time I've had mamma hatched chicks. Yesterday was the first day she brought them out-about a week old. I watched them all day; how she kept them together, called them to her when they encountered a barrier, stood off the other hens...
My new Buff mamma just brought her 6 chicks out for the first day and at night fall she won't go back into the coop. She's sitting under it with the chicks tucked beneath her. I'm afraid they won't be safe.
Does she know what she's doing?
Well, its gone. I tried giving her some electrolytes but it was too late. she was fine at bed time but clearly distressed this morning. too bad, hate to see any suffer so maybe its better.
Well, I couldn't save her. after a 3rd warm bath I set her up in the bathroom with a heating pad for the night. this morning she seemed about the same but in the afternoon she suddenly lurched up and down and was gone.
I did another probe last night while I had her in the water and I think I...
Thanks for the quick reply. I tried her on some of the oyster shell I always make available but she wasn't interested in eating it. I crushed a Tums into some pedialylte and used a syringe to get a few millimeters down. She doesn't seem distressed-her comb is nice red, her eyes are clear but...
My silver laced wyandotte appears to be egg bound. I've given her a sit in a warm bath and put her in a box in the dark closet and she has done a poo after that (runny and yellow) but no egg yet.
My question is, I've read to give her calcium to quickly help that egg (if there is one in there)...
I think this hawk has had his eye on the girls. Because mine are full size birds I didnt think a hawk would try. They would normally fly off with their prey but he probably was surprised at her size and just killed and began to eat her. As I came around with the mower I probably scared the...
So sorry for her-hope she makes it. I try to treat this experience as a "farmer" would. They are stock animals that have a purpose, but you get to know them and can't help but treat them as pets too.
