No bad odor. It could have been cancer, it just seemed very fast developing.
We do have brown recluse here, not that I see them much, but theoretically it could be and I've been thinking along those lines.
It progressed quickly. I let them free range at least every other day so I see them all...
To end the thread, we sadly ended up putting her down. We tried amoxicillin and cleaning/scraping out her beak, which got worse over time. It seemed to be the only low risk operation we could reasonably do. It continued to worsen over the course of a couple weeks to the point she practically...
Thanks everyone. I haven't see any yellow or white lesions and there is no smell. I was also wondering about cancer but it happened very fast to be cancer (I think), as she was normal looking to looking like this in a matter of days. I see my chickens almost every day when I let them out and put...
Found it very difficult to get a pic. Here is the best I got. It seems to be some kind of abscess. It's on the left side and the left side of the interior of the beak as well. It's gray and brown color, I didn't see white or yellow. Tongue and roof of mouth looked ok. Right side of face and beak...
@Wyorp Rock hmm no picture still, but this morning I can see her breathing is labored. I can hear her breathing and her beak is slightly open perpetually. I guess it's probably a respiratory issue.
I suspect what I thought was dirt inside her beak is something else as it's still there. It looks...
Sorry I couldn't get a pic since I was alone. The inside beak looked ok, I saw a little dirt on one side (I think) but I didn't see any yellow or white pasty material, nor did I smell anything but I could only get like a foot away.
I'll try to get another shot/look this evening.
I don't see anything but it is possible as I keep bees as well. Though I've not seen anything like this before. It's not just her eye either, you can see her cheek is swollen on the one side.
Hi,
My buff's face is swollen on one side only. The other side looks completely normal. She is also moving and eating normally and seems fine other than this swollen half of her face. She is a bout 6 years old.
Do you have any idea what this could be? Should I separate her from the flock...
Thank you all. And I will check for canker but I haven't noticed those symptoms in her.
Could her feeling poorly be due to her age? I know she is not very old but I guess approaching 5 which is the short end of their lifespan? Oddly, they should be pretty healthy birds as they get a lot of free...
Hi,
I have a bird, probably about 4.5 years old, Orpington. Don't know exactly when it happened, maybe a couple months ago, she stopped being super interested in meal worms. She used to be like all my birds currently are and come running for meal worms, but now she just slowly walks towards me...
For anyone in the future reading this... I switched to a higher protein feed 16->20%. I also decreased the artificial lighting time and just figured I'd let them have a natural break over the winter.
We got some eggs in that time, possibly due to the food switch. Now, as day light hours have...
Any idea how long we should exercise precautions for? I am not finding much useful information from official sources. Are we just to keep holding biosecurity measure until we see how the situations develop?
Poor birds gonna have some serious cabin fever, but I guess that beats the flu.
