    Hen gasping for air

I had a beautiful rooster act like this once, it was during a very rainy season, come to find out We had an overpopulation of nats that year, and they will plug up their nostrils. Of course it happened over the weekend and I could not get access to a vet, nor would they probably come out for a...

Things i never knew about chickens...

& I've seen them eating their poop under where they roost - how gross! I threw an egg there once - and they all went for it - ate poop & all! My 2 black hens are egg eaters (have caught them both eating the eggs) - have the calcium shell for them - but these 2 have ate more eggs than I can...

I can call them by name, pick em up, talk baby talk to them & they talk back to me. We've had some great conversations!

Nesting Box Idea...Is it a dumb idea?

I use a nesting box, works great, but apparently I must have a chicken that likes to break eggs open & eat em ... some days an egg or two is broke open and the content usually devoured. Their coop is sealed tight, so I know it's them, plus I've seen em eat an egg when I've accidentally dropped...

    Cats and pine shavings

Hi, Am so interested in using chicken layer feed as kitty litter for my 1 (& only) cat, Precious. She's going on 13 this year and the last few months has had a terrible rash on lower tummy. Going back to vet today (4th time), probably for another steroid shot, but have found from research...

1 of my Beautiful girls is being "shunned" by the flock

No blood as of yet ... probably b/c I stopped them from attacking her right away. Her comb is gone though from when they pecked her before & I removed her and had her in my basement the last couple weeks, but that is not something I want to keep up. Respiratory seems to be fine, she acts good...

1 of my Beautiful girls is being "shunned" by the flock

Since it was 43 degrees yesterday - I tried to put SuzieQ back in w/ the 5 other hens - they still attacked her - she is healthy now - or seems to be. She put her head down - and it looked like she was going to just let them kill her - so I got after them w/ a stick that I tied a plastic bag to...

1 of my Beautiful girls is being "shunned" by the flock

So now am down to six hens, and the 1 that was being picked on so bad, well I put her in the basement ... she seems to be feeling good, so maybe I should try to put her back in w/ the other 5? Or will she be too cold now that winter is in full force here in the midwest . . . I sure don't want...

Live in upper midwest - snow is coming - how to manage chicken run - advice needed please

Thank you - this helps a lot! Going to Menards tomorrow to pick up some plywood to put on the top of the run, will put a sheet of plastic underneath it that will also cover the northwest side where all the snow & wind come from. I will keep the top shoveled off and keep the door to the run...

Another chick is acting sickly - seeking advice please

Hello, I had 8 beautiful hens one month ago ... one of the red chicks was acting like she didn't feel good one day, so I fed her some bread & water, and held her, didn't feel any lumps or anything, but she seemed stressed I guess . . . the next morning she had passed away under the walk out...

Live in upper midwest - snow is coming - how to manage chicken run - advice needed please

thank you for sharing your thoughts. Will shavings be okay to use? I'm out of straw, and it's hard to find too. In hindsight, I wish I would have had them build the top of the run on a slant so snow would more easily slide off .. shucks!

Live in upper midwest - snow is coming - how to manage chicken run - advice needed please

Hello Everybody, So I had the sweetest 8 x 10 coop built this summer w/ a nice long run (guessing 15 ft), it took the girls a while to adjust and start laying eggs again, but all is well now . . . but w/ winter approaching, we get lots of snow here in Wisc & I need advice on how to handle...
