You can decrease the heat by 5 degrees a week. You will know if they are too warm as they will move as far from the heat source as possible. It is okay if they lay directly under it as long as they are not piling up, that would mean they are still cold and the light needs to be moved closer to...
Chicks sleep a lot, some more than others. Your chicks may be cold if they are piling up to sleep, and being 5 days old they should kept at around 95 degrees.
Feather loss in the vent area is usually due to mites or lice, inspect them closely with good lighting, you should be able to see them if that's the problem. The back areas are probably from rooster treading/breeding. Although not harmful in itself, it can lead to feather pulling. Spray the area...
I haven't either. I suppose it could have happened during the struggle and maybe the coon was scared off before eating. I have never dealt with a racoon that didn't come back until it was stopped, or ran out of chickens to kill. Good luck and keep us posted!
You are welcome. I also did some checking on the internet. Apparently a raccoon could have reached in and grabbed your hen. Can you set a live trap and see what you catch?
Wouldn't a raccoon have chewed the head off? Snakes are the only thing I have seen pull heads through a fence, but that was chicks and the snake was stuck in the wire afterwards. Sorry to see you lose a good bird. :(

. This gives chicks...
Straighten it out and splint it in place with small pieces of pipe cleaner and tape. You can bend a small piece of pipe cleaner to fit the correct angle of the leg and middle toe. Good luck!
