That is wise. We did too- we last introduced new pullets several months ago and kept them separate for weeks before integrating them. None showed signs of being sick. This hen is an original flock member, she is about 2.5yrs old. None of our birds have ever been sick before.
Our hen will take sugar water, and she ate some scrambled egg this morning, and her eyes are both mostly clear, although still very swollen. Honey is a good idea, and I hadn't considered she might be depressed but it makes sense.
We plan to give her a wash tonight (to help the vent gleet) and...
That article is very useful, thanks!
We are continuing to keep this hen separately in a warm room for now, cleaning her eyes and applying polysporin nightly, and waiting for the Tylosin to arrive in the mail. She drinks water but will not eat, and it has been several days, so not sure if she...
One more topic: there are six others in the flock. Aside from replacing the bedding in the coop and cleaning the waterer/refilling with fresh water, and of course keeping an eye out for symptoms in the other birds, is there anything else I can do for the flock? Also, if my sick hen makes it...
Thanks again for the advice, everyone. This evening my husband and I were able to clean her eyes a bit; we wiped out the pus, flushed with saline, and applied polysporin. Checked on her a minute ago and each eye is about half open and half filled with pus, so definitely an improvement from this...
Oh, and I don't have any antibiotics on hand that are meant for birds.
Or do you mean that certain people antibiotics could be useful? I do have a bit of a leftover cefdinir oral suspension leftover from my son, so formulated for a very small person (a 1yr old) . It is several months old.
I do have an old heating pad. That's a good idea! Thank you for all the advice and kind words. I took some pics that show her general posture (she is resting near some jar lids of sugar water and plain yogurt) and her eye (full of pus with a tiny slit of eyeball showing through now. The other...
Really good info, thank you.
She hasn't laid eggs since last spring. No new introductions to the flock since last autumn, and all the other birds appear healthy. I have never wormed her. I will investigate the other things you asked about and try to get pics. It is tough timing as I am home...
I don't think she has been pecked. Both eyes have a lot of pus. :( I can hear her breathing audibly a bit, she sounds a tiny bit congested or something, but not heavily. The room I have her in is about 68 degrees. Is that warm enough? Or might she need a heat lamp?
Yes, you're right, vent gleet. I think maybe the eye thing is unrelated but she has a separate infection going on because maybe she was already weakened by ongoing vent gleet...not sure though.

She probably has vent gleet. I think pasty butt is...
So, I have a barred rock hen who is very sick right now. She is around 2 years old, and has had ongoing pasty butt situation for at least six months, and no matter how we have cared for her (cleaning it thoroughly, acv in the water) it always comes back. So yesterday I noticed this same hen was...
Here they are. The black mystery birds that my friend thinks are some Easter Egger cross are a bit bigger now. You can see the one with the streaks in the very back. Any ideas?
Thanks! Good question! Of the new ones that are currently laying, I have one Amauricana that I raised from a chick, and four mystery birds that a friend hatched and gave me as pullets. She thought they would be Easter Eggers, but they all four came out solid black, and she thinks they are some...
Thanks everyone! Great suggestions. I candled them and found one with a hairline crack. No floaters among the others, which was what I expected. Delicious!
