Introducing my babies to the big dogs...

Since you've had them in the coop already, it might not be as hard to introduce them into the flock as it would be if the others hadn't already gotten used to seeing them. Just be cautious with any roosters and the young'uns...they can be a little rough! :)

How to check for lice and mites?

Be sure to really lift up their wings and expose areas of skin when looking for mites on silkies. They're so fluffy, sometimes the mites are hard to spy. I've noticed in particular mites congregate around their vent when I've not seen them elsewhere on their bodies. When in doubt, I'd say dust...

    Re-Introduction not going so well....

You could also put the hen you're reintroducing into a wire dog kennel for a day or two within your coop so that she's w/ the group and the rest of the flock can have time to adjust to her. They can see one another, but no worries about fighting.

    best route to kid-friendly hens?

If you'd like a sweet natured chicken that's great for the family, I'd highly recommend the silkie! Not only do they have a sweet dispostion, but they are considered a "high" broody breed, so you'll easily get a hen that goes broody and will have no problem in hatching & raising her chicks! :)
