I definitely have a bully momma hen who turned nasty after hatching out and raising chicks last summer. She even bullies her own babies and it's only the cockerel she submits to! I will be trying all three of the suggestions with my 11 OELs I got two weeks ago from McMurray Hatchery, though I...
Any tips on how to keep WFBS in Northern climates? I have what I think is a single pullet from McMurray, only two weeks old but already my favorite (she thinks I'm her mamma, so cute!).
So 5 years later, I get the same assortment, so this thread has been fun to read. It would be "more" fun if Zewlie would post an update as to what the chicks turned out to be (curious minds want to know :pop) I have a chick similar to pic 2 & 3, that I'm hoping/thinking is a White Faced Black...
I'm so happy to have found this thread. I searched for help last night on assisting hatching, but everything I read said "WAIT", "DON'T TOUCH", "SHRINK WRAP", etc.... I was so discouraged and my instinct was telling me my chicks were in trouble.
I could see through my Hovabator windows that...
I have four eggs that are on day 21 and have not pipped externally and one egg pipped externally yesterday (still in there the little peeper!). Would it be safe to pull the non-externally pipped eggs out to candle tonight?
So very confusing for the average small flock owner. I can't locate any decent amount of tetracycline locally (only big amounts for the larger farmers) but can locate packets of water soluble for fish. So I'm going to try that and hope I can figure this mess out...getting a headache already! lol
The product was Beryl’s Friendly Bacteria, but it's from the UK. I used to use a product that was similar on puppies years ago called Benebac, though it came in Yummy (to dog) gel form at that time.
The old hen passed last night.
This was our first (and possibly last) foray into ducks...
A young rouen drake (about a year old) that we recently purchased died after only showing signs of distress for about a day. The morning he did not come out of the coop with the hens so we shooed him out to join them. We went away for the day and came home to see him sitting in the yard beside...
Oh, I have a BCM cockeral (I think) and an EE pullet (I think!) from this spring's hatching. Thanks for the idea! Now I just have to wait and make sure I have a BCM roo! lol
Do you mix the bath ingredients or layer them? And just to be sure, you are using Stall Dry in place of sand? I have two bags (got an AMAZING deal on one..ripped bag) that I haven't found much use for yet.
Wow, high praise Karen! Thank you, I appreciate the time and care in your words :) I will contact Brian and hopefully I can convince him to allow me to start with his Speckled Sussex. The hen pictured on his site is a beauty! Thank you again!

And from the Maritimes, I'm on the search for Speckled Sussex :) I've found hatcheries online but I'm not looking to purchase from a large hatchery, would rather go to someone who is knowledgeable and breeding from quality stock. Any leads on this?
It's getting harder to find regular incandescent light bulbs and even harder to find a lamp that will take anything over 60 watts it seems. How do you setup the light over the brooder? I'm having difficulty coming up with ideas to make that work. Newbie here too :)
