Not too long afterwards, they instituted an "urban chicken permit" that cost over $100. Can you believe it... #ShakeMyHead. One can have cats/dogs with no permit, but not chickens - who provide food AND compost common kitchen waste. Again... #ShakeMyHead. We now live in France where we can have...

Great comment Sapper & thanks. There is actually chickenwire underneath the dirt that you see in that pic of the three hens in front of the coop. I just put chunks of dirt in there, on top of the mesh, to give them something to scratch & to cover the wire.

Hi Twendt, it was tough for our daughter & I was churning inside (local dogs made more noise) but we went on to replace with some Flemish Giant rabbits that brought out kids tons of enjoyment (+ a few rounds of babies) as well. So we moved on to something else rather than staying on the...

Really nice build article. Love he abundance of pics (You have a beautiful setting!) and what a great idea for the storage area. Very convenient to have stuff like that right on hand. Well done! Since the poop board has no lip, do you find that they scratch all of the sand off?

    Chicken Breed Focus - Australorp

Looks like Dawn Feathers isn't camera shy! ;) Here are my four at 4.5 weeks... (the parents are blue australorps... so the charcoal / black colours aren't surprising... light grey on the other hand.... she's almost a "lavender"... quite pretty.)

    Chicken Breed Focus - Australorp

Will do. The parents are Blue Australorps so one chick (#2) is all black, two are more of a charcoal colour (#1 + another chick, not pictured). Those colours didn't surprise me given the parents. "Blondy" (chick #3 above), however, is more of a light grey colour - (s)he's the odd one out & I'm...

    Chicken Breed Focus - Australorp

Question for all you experts out there... my aussie chicks are 3wks old today. Below are 3 of the 4 of them. Chick 1 (photos 1a & 1b) is the biggest of the four and seems to have a bit more comb development compared to chicks #2 & 3 - despite hatching a day later than them . What do you think...

Well done, nice looking bunch. How was your hatch rate? Only once did I try hatching out quail in an incubator (from some of my own eggs) and the hatch rate was really low compared to chicken hatch rates. Wasn't sure if it was just me or if hatching out quail was generally more difficult.

You've really included everything in this article... from the build pics to the computer generated plans, ongoing maintenance & cleaning, updates & ideas on what you'd do differently. What an informative article. Great job!

I don't know which is more impressive, that you HAVE a connected coop (with video cam, etc) or that you're the one who put the whole system together. Good for you! Also, very nice coop / run / setting. Amazing that you captured that fox attack on video!
