    I 'am having the same issue tonight with 4/6 hens and my rooster. They are pecking at the base of their tails and it looks like a hard black bump, but some are showing pinkish stains which looks like bleeding. I just saw it tonight and the coop has low lighting.     Cheers Hoosiers :). I am new to BYC and new to Indiana! I have 9 girls and Roger, the infamous rooster. They are Amber Whites. We just settled north of Terre Haute, in the Otter Creek area, and I would be willing to host or drive somewhere to meet up with BYC folks. Do you all ever get together?

    ooooh. Thank you. They do get to forage, but much less in the ice and snow. I wonder if I should be giving them grit in the winter when they are out much less?

    I am a new chicken momma. Why do you give them grit? How do you puchase it? Mine are 9 months old and laying. I give them calcium separately, and layer feed with grain/seed treats in the evening. I should also add they get a hot breakfast when it is 20 or below. Oats or cornmeal.
