First Cull, Didn't go so well

What a horrible experience. I am so sorry for you and your husband. Killing is never easy but it is at times, necessary. Ax is the best method, quick and done. You can even put a little bag over her head if wanted. Don't let the other chickens watch. I had a similar experience killing a rabbit...

    Plexiglass walls in run?

I have a small run outside the main coop with a smaller run. A pen within a pen so to speak. We are now getting torrential rains also and the water was running into the inner pen and making the outer pen a mud bath. We used sand and I built in up more near the inner pen so to protect the inner...

Keeping a Chicken Run From Getting Muddy?

Hi, I only have a small run but have found sand to be the most effective so far. We have been getting way too much rain lately and I hate mud. I have used straw in the past, but sand is so much easier to clean up the poop than straw. Hope that helps.

Have you got the "wheres my treat* look today?

Mine love black soldier fly larvae - I can't find meal worms here in town or they are just too expensive. They are dried and don't smell bad. They love lettuce and cucumber also. They really don't go for their scratch mix that I buy but our local quail love it.

Never thought of dog food. Will look into it.

If feed stores closed and you can’t free range...

What a good idea. I think I will plant greens for them inside their run also - protected by the wire so they don't destroy the crop. Thank you. With everything shutting down I did go buy some more feed but can't get any treats at this time. Supply problem. Anyways, it is coming spring and the...

Has anyone got Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (Bird Keepers Lung/Flu)

I will go back to wearing a mask again. In the winter, my glasses would fog up too bad to see, but the weather is better and it is time to do the coop. Masks on! Thanks for the reminders of how important it is.

What's the problem with hens sleeping in the nesting box?

I live in Canada and we have had some cold snaps. My two hens have taken to sleeping in their nesting box also. It is long with lots of straw to snuggle down in. I have let them stay there for the winter as it is warmer but plan to start closing the nesting door at night when the weather turns...

Is this egg size and shape normal?

Looks good to me. I have one hen, the smallest, who lay an egg almost twice as large as the large hen. Go figure. They all taste good.

Scammed by a buyer; what to do?

Yes, you have been stolen from. It is not a good feeling, especially when the thief tries to make you feel guilty. She also used her children - she is teaching them how to defraud and steal. Not right in any sense. What to do? Take someone with you, preferably a constable or animal protection...

    URGENT! AUSTRALORP FEMALE BLEEDING!!

Is she eggbound? If she is trying to get an egg out, put her in a warm Epsom bath for about 20 - 30 minutes and see if that helps her.
