If my knowledge of genetics is correct then breeding the pea comb out of Araucana's also means breeding out the blue egg gene. They should be on the same allele.
I agree with this. I only candle eggs at 11 days of incubation and take away only the ones that have 0 development, all the others even if seemingly halted stay under the broody. Even if they don't seem to be moving or pip around the day they are supposed to hatch, still keep them under the...
I do not. I have 3 coops and one is is standing in mud. So it's a bit difficult to change each time. I do however make sure I do chicken stuff first and avoid stepping into the coop if I can. I do the other farm work last and then wash them after I am done.
I ended up using the spray on all the cracks of the coop and on top of the 2 mothers. I thought that was safer than directly on the chicks themselves, and the chicks poke through the wings etc. So they should end up with some on themselves. I haven't seen the lice since.
I have 8 chicks...
Waterfowl aren't going into the run, but they do graze on the sheep pastures bordering the run. And they do sometimes poop when flying, I occasionally see the drops around the barn. As I live near a lot of dairy farms and therefore grazing pastures for waterfowl the risk here is a lot higher...
You are right that technically they don't need to be cooped up. But everyone needs to shield their chickens from wild birds and their dung falling from the sky. Meaning your run would need to have a roof. And I have trees in my run, so that is not possible. I do however have a combined coop...
Had the same with my CX pullets. Wanted them to experience the snow but they didn't jump out like they normally would when I opened the coop door. They are cooped up because of avian influenza. They did eat it when I offered some for inspection in my hand.
How can you see they aren't viable anymore? If possible I would leave them in for the full 3 weeks once they started developing. Worst case scenario is killing the fetuses if they actually are alive.
I have a very similar situation right now. Had 11 eggs under a broody and they were all supposed to hatch this Tuesday. I already removed 2 when they were halfway though incubation as those didn't develop anything and were not fertilized. So of the 9 left, 2 hatched Monday and 5 on Tuesday. I...
Having a bit of an urgent problem! 7 of the eggs have hatched but I can see lice on the comb of the little chicks. Is it safe to use a permethrin spray? Seems like that might kill them, so what are measures I can take?
3 of the chicks are Ayam Cemani bearded Polish crossbreds, while 4 are Ayam...
I do agree with you to a degree. I also have sheep and therefore never really trusts dogs, most here aren't trained to ignore prey drive at all. I have experienced the damage they can do. I do know livestock guardian dogs at are good way to protect sheep from predators, but I don't know if I...
Once before leaving for work might work, but I would prefer them to see humans as little as possible.
Sadly offering food twice a day won't really work for me with work and all. Especially in winter when I won't be home during daylight hours. With the CX pullets I use an automatic pet feeder...
It says in "Besluit houders van dieren" 3 separate times to protect animals if needed against health risks, bad weather and predators. So it's a pretty dark grey area. It can be argued that it would be needed if introduced into an environment with potentially Martens and foxes (a forested area)...
Sometime in the future I would like to get a semi-feral group going and see how well they do here. However because they are domesticated animals that I own I am required by law to protect them from predators and coop them up when avian influenza happens. Then there is the feeding, which would...
