Gasping for air only while lying down and being held!

In this thread, the chicken died of peritonitis, and had similar symptoms that Lilybug has. Here's a link to info on peritonitis. http://www.chickenvet.co.uk/health-and-common-diseases/egg-laying-issues/index.aspx

The other thing I want to mention, and others may disagree with me, is that I do not use a syringe anymore to feed or medicate. I aspirated one of my roosters that way, he ended up getting liquid food and vitamin supplements into his lungs, his breathing became raspy and he contracted pneumonia...

My hens enjoy tuna, but I rinse some of the salt out. I have one hen that decided to molt in the spring, and to get her feathers to grow out, i will give her treats of mealworms, eggs, sunflower seeds, and a little bit of shredded cheese. And they all love grapes and raisins. And cooked rice...

Well, I'm glad to hear she doesn't have bugs or is egg bound. If the vet says she's anemic, then I guess make sure she takes her supplements. Good Luck, and I'll keep you and Ladybug in my thoughts.

The other thing to note is that they will pant when they are hot, which is different than taking big gasps of air. During the wintertime, my chickens will hop up on my lap for warmth, but when the temps go up, every time I hold them now for too long, they pant because they are hot. It's a way...

Not sure how much Safeguard orally, I've only used in their water. Pour on Ivermectin should be okay as well, but I thought it was more meant for external parasites.

Also feel her crop. It should be hard and compact. If it is soft and squishy, she could have a sour crop, which is a yeast infection. It makes their crop swell with liquid and they will not eat very much, making them slowly starve. You may also see them moving their head jerkily to one side...

Safeguard is marketed as a goat dewormer, and is a white liquid that you feed orally. Myself and a lot of others use it as a chicken dewormer. You should be able to find it at your local farm store, like Tractor Supply. Also get a needless syringe to help you measure out 3ml/gal added to...

It should be okay to use Ivermectin or SafeGuard after 5 weeks. I don't like Wazine because what it does is put the worms to sleep so that the chickens can expel them, but does not kill them. Then the worms wake up without a host, but wait in the dirt or the coop for another opportunity to...

Could be gape worm, or worms in general. Gape worm symptoms are gasping for air frequently. Try Ivermectin paste, about a pea size works for me per chicken (I use empty gel capsules you can find at the health food store and pry open their mouth using their comb as a hand hold and shove it...

    Aggressive Rooster - dishtowel fix!

I've been keeping chickens for about a year now, and am still learning every day. I started out with 30 chickens (10 Black Australorps, 10 GL Wyandottes, and 10 Cuckoo Marans) and two of them ended up being boys, one of the Australorps and one of the Cuckoos. I didn't have any restrictions...

2016 BYC Calendar - Your Pictures Needed!

Yeah, for the first few weeks of Pastey's life he had pasty butt, so that's how the name stuck. Everyday he got a quick run under the kitchen sink, then a smear of vaseline so it wouldn't stick. Didn't suspect he was a roo until his comb started getting bigger than the other girls, and still...
